Plenty of proper UK cars about .......... no need to settle for an Import these days. Therefore I would only buy a UK car.
FULL Subaru History for at least the first 5 years and then independents ok
The wagons are better all round .... the women usually like the wagons best.
Clearly, you will strive to get a one owner and steer clear of modified cars.
Meet the owner, 40+ age group and you could be onto a winner - 20's and you will be looking at a thrashed example, generally.
Do NOT buy a cheap one .... they do NOT exsist!!

Hello Dave,
It is a rarity when people on this forum agree with anything pslewis has to say, but he seems to be right!
I was lucky enough to by my '99 Impreza turbo from a friend who cherished it. I then continued to cherish it and have passed it on to another friend as I left the country. Completely un-modified apart from a "bigger" back box. The only downside was the car is green, but it grew on me!
They are rare, but the un-modified car is the one you will be looking for. It's not my cup of tea, and you are never sure who has added what and when, and how long it will last! UK cars only with full Subaru history is pretty essential!
Mine was under extended Subaru warranty up until mid 2005, although I never had a problem with it. When I was looking to sell mine privately, I would have been asking around 6000 - 6500 pounds, excellent condition, 60,000 miles. Alas I sold it to a friend for 4500. I felt it important to pass the fun and pleasure onto a good mate!
Obviously you can start with autotrader.co.uk but you will need to ensure the car is hpi checked and get a good opinion from RAC or AA when buying privately.
Where abouts are you? The dealer network is good and you know the car will be sound or at least under dealer warranty and good condition cars at that age will be available on the forecourt.
Wagon or saloon is personal choice, wagon will probably be harder to find and saloon looks better IMO by far.
If you really have a bit of cash to spend, the P1 is the car to look for which was the coupe!

Personally, I wouldn't get a P1 ... but I guess £8k would get one quite easily? The P1 is not the most reliable of Impreza's.
The STi, well ....... could you live with one?? They are fine for the length of the test drive and/or the first hour - then they become a chore, they rattle your fillings out and are just too raw ............ so the wisdom has it.
The BUG EYES are really ugly and have a pathetic rear spoiler.
Blob eyes, ok looking - but £8k is too low for one of those I guess??
In 2007 the Impreza will come in hatchBack form and with a 3.0 Litre flat 6!!
Pete
