What does the law state with regards to towing. I have a 1998 Nissan Primera GT and was wondering what is the maximum weight I can tow (including trailer and car onm trailer)

You may well find that the towing weight of the car becomes a restricting factor first. This will be listed in the manual, usually 2 weights, 1 braked the other not.

sounds like you are going to try towing something big

I would of though it would of been around a ton?

Towing can be very dangerous if your not experianced (I should know im not!)

It is usually recommended that you do not tow any more than 85% of the kerbweight of the towing car. Checking a site for a 98 Primera (site was http://www.cuddles.abelgratis.net/kerbweights.htm) suggests a kerb weight for the car of 1225kg, 85% being 1041kg- just over a tonne, ie. not very much.

You will find most car trailers are 400kg or more, so the weight of the trailered car can only be 600kg or so- only a light kit car or single seater will be be this sort of weight.

You can tow above the 85% limit, in theory up to the towing limit of the car spec (probably in the region of 1.2-1.5T I expect) but be aware of potential stability problems (i.e. take it very easy speed-wise) and possible interest from the boys-in-blue if you exceed the rear axle weight limit of the tow car.
