Default The shame that is now the NHS..........

First it was HUGE parking fees at hospitals, with even NHS staff having to pay.........(and we all know how well paid THEY are, don't we?)
Back-door funding at it's worst!

Then this morning it emerges that Tony Bliar's year 2000 promise to equip each bed with a phone, TV etc, has been rolled out, but at 49p per minute for incoming calls, and £10 to watch TV for THREE HOURS!

A tax on sickness and disease, anybody?

Someone is making a LOT of money somewhere out of this!

Anyone want to bet it's one of Bliar's mates???

They should do away with the NHS, if you can't afford it you die.

As far as I see it, there is a cost associated with installing all these bedside tvs. This is an IMPROVEMENT on what was in wards before - ie, a single tv at the end of a ward, no choice in what channel it was set to, and NO bedside phone.

The radio is free IIRC, and there are public phones as before in the hospitals somewhere. No-one is forcing you to watch the tv, and I think they even give you some free tv time every day.

It was something that was farmed out as the NHS couldn't be seen spending £m's on bedside tv's.

Surely everyone would prefer the NHS to be seen spending money on healthcare, and not entertainment

Why is he smiling? Because he doesn't have to pay for the radio!

Dunno why the aggro towards PatientLine - done some work with them before. The product is quite good. They're only providing a service that was tendered for.

As I said before, if it wasn't for the tender, you'd still be on one telly to a ward, and no internet access

Think about it folks. Why should a hospital HAVE to provide you with free tv & internet funded from healthcare funds?

The point is, the way it was "sold" suggested that these services would be provided as part of the NHS "package". That isn't what has happened. They have just been contracted out to a third party to sell to patients at whatever exhorbitant rate they choose. I don't see what was stopping hospitals from doing this off their own backs, it's just Blair making empty promises again.

..err...because the core business of the NHS is not IT services & support.
Std practice to outsource a non-core function.

Ahhhh. What was stopping the NHS outsourcing to provide this service BEFORE Billy declared it was a good idea? Nothing. He isn't making better use of existing services, he isn't providing more for the same money, he really isn't doing anything at all but he is trying to claim the glory from it.

If NL could get away with making an election peldge of "The sun will rise each morning while we are in power" they would and they'd bloody charge us for it.

..and if the NHS had gone into a £200m deficit due to installing free tv & internet for everyone, you'd be happier????

Neither. The original poster seems to be upset at non-NHS core services being provided that were not there before. This was done without NHS funding. Seems a good idea to me.

From an apolitical standpoint, what do you guys want?

It's a great service, but it can't come for free. Cannot justify it as a std NHS service to have bedside tv & internet. So it can't really come out of the public purse can it? The charges don't seem too bad - £3.50/day?

Try "reading" my posts. It's that NL have taken the glory for something the NHS could have done anyway - i.e. the NHS could have just got on and outsourced the service rather than waiting for NL to add it as an election pledge and then had the NHS outsource it.

I did read them...you were straying away from the original points and rambling on about some dull political nonsense

The issue would still remain. The tv would still be chargeable.

You really do keep missing the point. NL didn't sell it as "We'll allow hospitals to get thrid parties in to sell you access to TV etc while you're in hospitals". Hospitals didn't need that mandate. NL sold it as "We'll make sure all patients have a personal TV and a phone by their beds as part of the service". If they had done it form the public purse I would have been outraged, but as they didn't pay for it they shouldn't be taking the credit either.

But that's NOT how NL sold it, they made out that they were making some massive improvement to the NHS, in fact they did bugger all. They may was well try and take the credit for Virgin making a profit.

I'm seeing through the spin, I care that NL are trying to take credit for things they haven't done, it's just plain dishonest.

Imlach: you're missing MY point: why should a HUGE profit be made from people's sickness?

And I don't want to hear anything about them/their relatives not having to use it if they don't want to. It was touted as a service, not a scam for Bliar's mates to make money

And why should relatives of sick people, or the sick themselves on outpatients, have to pay HUGE parking charges?

Why should NHS staff have to pay to come to work?

Why should OUR (Humberside) Cancer care be moved to the north bank of the Humber, meaning anyone doing outpatients, or visiting someone else, has to pay £5 for the Humber Bridge as WELL AS pay to park, travel etc etc.

And will New Labour waive the bridge toll for those needing care? NOPE But they WILL waive it for those visiting relatives etc in Hull prison!
