We're very interested in a 1950's semi. However, it has a "back boiler" where the fireplace should be. This runs the central heating and hot water.
However, it is on a timer, not thermostatically controlled and whilst it works fine, we'd be looking at a combi boiler.
Whats a ball park figure for installing a combi boiler, room thermostat and programable timer? Are non- combi boilers cheaper/easier to install? The hot water cylinder is less than 3 yrs old but takes up the space where a shower cubile could go (hence thinking of the combi.)
Can you still get a grant type payment towards inefficient boilers?

Actual boilers are between £500-750 I think, but all depends who you go with.
Some joker has just quoted us £1k to fit 3 extra rads, so waiting for a second plumber to come now for a re-quote.

Conversion from bbu to Combi. I would say £1500-2000 depending on spec of system. This is just for the boiler swapping from bbu to combi and maybe thermostatic valves fitting.

The prize will vary highly on the size of the house and the level of difficulty of the job. The average figure is about £1500.
If the job is a bit messy many plumbers will not want to do it. They like easy strighforward jobs and therefore some might quote you extremly high so you dont ask them to do the workd and if you do they will be happy about the extra money.

Brit gas quoted me £2200 for changing an old boiler to a new one in the same position [inc a flush]. Boiler cost was about £700. Connections were two pipes - one in, one out! I politely declined rather furiously!

I had similar when we wanted to replace an ageing boiler...
we had the usual crap...must replace whole system, not prepared to fit just a boiler... yadda yadda...
then a friend who works for a heating supplies centre, spoke to one of his customers....
friend supplied the boiler ... and one of his customers fitted it...
total cost for fitting £150 for the boilering £80 for the sparks
Mart

Ours was just under £1500. We had the old cast iron one taken out of the kitchen and a combi one installed in the garage. New pipes put in through the garage (and a new drainpipe cos the flue got in the way of the existing one!!) and rewiring of a light out-side due to the flue being in the way again.

Just a note of caution... Ours is designed to run only 1 tap at a time
(thanks very much installers
) - we have 5 people in the house and 2 bathrooms... We are waiting for it to die so we can install an uprated one
Anyway worth getting some advice on the capacity you require before getting it installed... unless you don't mind your shower going cold when someone flushes the loo downstairs
- it's not too bad actually - but we're just a bit miffed that for just a little extra we could have had the right boiler for the job!

We paid £2,000 for new boiler, 8 rads and thermostatic valves (through Corgi registered friend at work). We still have a back boiler were the gas fire should be but to save costs we left it were it was and got a electric fire. Installation costs would be less if you don't have lead pipes and solid floors (unlike what we had)! DIY sucks!
