.......been living in Texas for five months now, and after trying my hand at shooting when I first arrived, I decided guns actually aren't toys, I'm not Jack Bauer and they are very intimidating, scary and dangerous weapons!
However, just let my dogs out before I put them to bed and there is some sort of animal on the fence, crawling along....... It looked like a VERY BIG rat, really long tail, several inches, sort of armadillo shaped but had short fur instead of a shell. My first thought was a possum, but I can't find much info on the net. It was in the range of about two feet long with tail, four or five inches tall and looked like it weighed several pounds........ It didn't like my Rottweilers.
Anyone wildlife experts have any ideas? There is a breed of rat called a roof rat here, but it appeared to be much, much bigger than that.
Sadly, when trawling google for ideas, I learnt there are fifteen different species of poisonous rattlesnake in Texas which "may be viewed in almost any grassy area............"

If you should see one, admire from a distance and just move clamly away- they're not agressive and won't follow you or anything like that.

You could ask your neighbours?
This site has a reasonable pic:

Coincidentally, I noticed last week that the local "Sports and Outdoors" store now sells what appear to be M16's! Last week I only needed tennis *****, but I may be going back!

Is an AR-15 not a bit of an overkill for one possum? A Ruger 10-22 would be better, maybe chambered for an improved 'magnum' rimfire...

It doesn't sound like they are dangerous...
Unlike the Honey Badger which is one nasty SOB!
http://www.honeybadger.com/
these animals are actually shy and inoffensive. When hard pressed, they will slip into a catatonic trance, imitating death, thus the term that has been coined "playing possum.
