Question Buying an Expensive Watch Off the Internet...Yay or Nay ?

I've decided on a nice Tag Heuer watch for my engagement present off my fiancee :

http://www.tagheuer.com/the-collecti...acer/index.lbl

I've had it priced in the high street, trouble is they can't seem to beat prices off the internet - I've found it here :

http://www.aatime.com/productdetail.asp?productid=6819 for nearly £200 cheaper than Goldsmiths. The lady in Goldsmiths said 9/10 watches were fakes

I know you get piece of mind buying from a shop, but is peace of mind worth £200 ? Are there any disadvantages from buying it form the shop above, or Blitz Watches for example ? If there was a problem with the watch could I still take it into my local tag dealers to get it repaired ?

Thanks

Matt

I'd only buy a watch on the net, if I had tried it on first.

They can look nice on the window, but not on your wrist.

Stick with the shops, at least you know what you are getting is real and any problems you can always take it back. Plus you aint paying for it

Go into Goldsmiths and ask them to match the internet price, I got £210 (£1100 > £890) off my Seamaster in Goldsmiths on Sheffield high street by taking a print out from Blitz watches in and telling them I'd buy one there and then if they matched it.

P.S. They make a hell of a lot of money on watches, they can afford to match the Internet prices

with only a small amount of work you can almost always get a high street retailer to match ( or beat ) web prices , the best deal generally come from the independents rather than the chains

Also Matt; buy with your credit card. Should the watch turn out to be less than pukka then the credit card issuer is jointly liable, so you really cant lose out. The woman in Goldsmiths didnt know what she was talking about, but Im sure you realise that.

out of stock. when you go for a price match the answer could be "ours are that price when we havent got any in stock"
Site looks ok so wont be a forgery. All the makers on there would have shut it down a long time ago.
forgery most likely to be on ebay..pubs...market stall..abroad(tourist spots)
ie Cuggi.Rolax.etc

Goldsmith's bettered the web price when I bought my Chrono Avenger which saved me about £260

I got the impression I might have been able to wrangle a bit more as well but was chuffed about the deal and got the strap adjusted with extra links as part of the service so didn't have to go "cap in hand" to an official dealer if I'd bought it over the web...

nay

haggle down an authorised dealer, all the numbers are on the net and get them to deliver it to your local store.
I do this with goldsmiths.

No risk whatsoever.

Another option is a romantic engagement weekend in Geneva. £19 each way (+taxes) and many hundreds of pounds potential savings

I bought a Carrera Chronograph from AA Time about 20 months ago and saved a lot of money. It arrived on time, but was without warranty card. I rang them and they promised to send it on. It arrived the next day. I'd use them again.

Cheers
