Looks like it is well designed with the building and commissioning really taken into account by the design engineers. I appreciate this as the sort of things I work on everyday are the exact opposite!

I didn't realise Airfix done kits that big!

I wouldn't like to be the lorry driver transporting a wing if the weather got a bit windy!

Very impressive!

Surely its going to be limited to landing at only a handfull of UK airports tho being so huge?

The Americans will probably ban it from landing in the US as its European (just like they did with Concorde, which was only allowed to land at a couple of airports there)

The build process seems very inefficient compared to Boeing!
yep - have to agree! - why built huge bits of a plane all over europe and then ship it to all one place - surely much better to build it all in one place.

I know its all to do with the EU and government contracts and back room big money deals - still seems bizzarre when you see it played out in a film like that!

In effect, Boeing, like Airbus also build multiple sub-assemblies, which are produced at multiple sites then shipped and assembled at singular location. The only difference is the distance between sites where the majority of sub assemblies are manufactured.

I suppose it depends on the cost of transportation vs cost of centralised labour.

Never ever thought aviation could be considered as a foot-loose industry

Only LHR is scheduled to have it operate in the UK, at present. Gatwick has had its runway strengthend as it needs an emergency divert airport.
As for the States, no comparison with Concorde, i know LAX is ready for it, suspect JFK is too.

Er, believe it or not, someone actually thought of that before they designed it

It was designed to fit in a standard "box" dimension - length, wingspan, height, u/c track etc and is able to land at most international airports. There has to be some taxiway and ramp upgrading at some airports. The two critical dimensions are wingspan, which it gets inside by around a metre, and the outboard pair of engines hang over the edges of the runway on some narrower strips

I hope Airbus paid that and not the taxpayer......they built the fecken thing...

I would not buy a new huge car, then expect the council to make all my local roads bigger so I could drive it out of my street - or am I missing something here?

Cool, work in Poyle about a couple of miles or so from the end of the North runway, they fly right over our heads, I was wondering when it was going to pop in on its tour, hopefully landing "on us", can you also find out when it's leaving ??

It'll never beat SSC though, fully loaded it used to scrape the roof when taking off whilst also rearranging your internal organs

p.s. what did they do for £450m ??, apart from the ramps taxiways and runway I cant think of anything else that needed upgrading, must have been Multiplex at those prices

Very interesting video.

Does raise the question of how much bigger can they go?

Neither paid for it. it was paid for by BAA, who own/run the airports.

Unfortunately it will have be landing on the southern runway, thats 09R/27L, as its the only one that has had the taxi widening work completed. Why £450m? Well, it had to have its own pier ( pier 6 ) designed and built. Remember its a double decker, so loads and unloads pax via both decks. Never been done before on this scale so new infrastructure needed building. Couple of good links:

Depends on how powerful the engines are I suppose. If lift/thrust is greater than weight/drag, in theory there's not size limit.

You also have to bear in mind that it's not just ramps, taxiways and aprons that have to accomodate this aircraft but also terminals themselves given the amount of passengers deplaning at one time - what do you think T5 is about apart from giving Waterside a shiny new toy to play with?

The rest of the infrastructure has to be upgraded to support it as well, otherwise you'll have nearly three thousand people with nowhere to go.
