Question Recommend a surveyor in the Reading area?

As it says in the title,

Other half & I are getting a place together; offer accepted yesterday.

It's an older place that has been lived in by the same couple for 44 years, so a bit lacking in the decoration & facilities departments but "has potential".

Can anyone recommend a good surveyor in the Reading (or Berkshire) area for us please?

Thanks,
Steve

Hmm - forgot how quickly things move in NSR!

Could a nice friendly moderator move this post to DIY please?

Cheers,
Steve

Can't recommend a surveyor, but you won't find a better solictor than Tom Mason at Bowles & Co in Castle Hill. (Used him 3 times & each time superb service, cheap solictors will cost you dear when they do bugger all !)

Wont the mortgage lender instruct the survey on your behalf ?

Dunk, thanks for that; hopefully we're ok on the solicitor front, but it's good to have a backup.

Paul, they might, but I want a complete survey with measurements etc as a base from which to think about an extension.

Cheers,
Steve

From the things I've looked into, you'll have three choices:

1. Instruct the surveyors that your mortgage lender uses to do a fulll survey (and pay whatever they charge)
2. Instruct whichever surveyors you want to do the survey, and pay the bank/building society a small fee (typicall £100-£200 I believe) to use these surveyors for the mortgage valuation
3. Get mortgage people to do a valuation survey for the mortgage, and instruct who you want to do the full whack. This is probably the most expensive option!

Hi Hades - sounds like you've been through the same situation recently then?

I'll chat with the mortgage folks next week to see what they can offer.

I just want to make sure we get a full survey, backed up by a surveyor'e professional indemnity insurance.

Cheers,
Steve

Kind of - am in the process of moving house (to not far from Reading, as it happens). Prospective purchase fell through and I'm likely to go to rented in the short term - hopefully get a healthy discount for being a cash buyer though. However, it's something I'd already looked into, and spoke to a couple of potential mortgage lenders about.

Well, thanks again for the info.

Hope you find a place that you like soon & get that discount!
