How long it takes can vary with the type of business activity. Some require a visit before they will issue a number.

I feel sorry for you Ray. If you weren't a fruit-cake, you'd not have to have VAT at all.

Ray,

Of course YOU are the only person in the whole of the UK applying for a VAT number. There are hundreds of VAT registration centres in the UK (count them) and they've got more staff than they can shake a stick at (No cutbacks of civil servants at all ).

If you've got a problem with it, ring up and complain. Refer to Charter Standards and speak to your elected MP who will in turn have a chat with good ol' Tony who'll arrange extra funding for the people who work at the VAT place (who incidentally are on crap wages) who will then recruit extra staff to deal with the massive number of applications and deregistrations every year.

I don't work in a VAT office, but take great offence at your last statement as I am a Crown Servant, which in turn makes me one of "the laziest ***** on the planet".

I hope you get a nice visit from the grumpiest VAT officer on the planet who raises the biggest vat assessment on the planet which will in turn shut the cleverest mouth on the planet up.

Have a nice day.

They're probably too busy posting 5 thousand odd messages on an internet forum to bother with your VAT registration

That's the spirit.
Have your own successful business but why give up a job that pays but requires no work to be done

I managed to get one done in 2 weeks - you have to speak to the case office dealing with your case and keep on at them.

Also - to speed things up use the Government Gateway and submit your application via that - it's easier and if I'm right you can check your submission progress.

Saying that - we're having another registered and it's taking the ****! Especially as we're asking for monthly registration rather than the default quarterly.

If anybody has some shortcuts I'd welcome a PM
