Default Today's English lesson

WTF is up with grammar and spelling these days, especially on this board?

The correct terms are "would have...", "should have...", "must have" or "could have...", not "would of...", "should of...", "must of" and "could of...".

Judging by the posts on here most of the people writing on this board don't know this.

Seems we're losing basic language skills, is it down to the "text message" generation?

Ok, English lesson/rant over, flame suit on, feel free to discuss amongst yourselves.

Well said that man!

People writing "I could of done that" instead of "I could have done that" is a real personal pet hate.

It's just lazy essex boy chav speak.

If you want to abbreviate then it's "I could've done that."

Leaving flame suit off, because I am right and therefore don't care if anyone disagrees.

The worst of it is when it's pointed out to an individual that they have used incorrect grammar they reply " I don't care" or similar. Another example of standards falling in this country.

Does it really matter that much?
I dare say that none of us use this to improve our language skills, so who cares?

There are people that are just crap at spelling, that just happens, the decent ones try to get it right etc. which is fair enough. However, using the wrong words (there their they're etc.) is NOT due to dyslexia, it's just ignorance.

Some people say they don't care etc. which is their perogative, however people will think they're stupid. It's like driving a car in 1st gear only and not using 2nd & higher despite people telling them that it'll help them get moving better. It's their right to use 1st only and we can't stop them however it does make them crap at driving like it makes people using poor spelling/grammer crap at written communication.

We can't all be great linguists and perfectors of the english language (I know I certainly am not) however it's only stupid people that refuse to grasp the basics.

As an aside, I believe that prepositions are never a good thing to end a sentence with.

Not your post. It's a point to those that are lazy rather than those that try to get things right. Dyslexics may spell words wrong (interpreting sequence of letters etc. in the wrong way etc.) but they are still trying to spell the correct word. The they're/there/their type words don't tend to affect dyslexics, they may spell the word wrong (e.g. thear, thiy're etc.) but not necessarily use the wrong word if you get my meaning

The odd typo/mistake is ok, the problem is that a lot of the time the posts are just not very easy to read.

I know what you mean, and I don't like the fact that it annoys me , but when I read some of the awful posts on here I just think "uneducated chav" . But it has also crossed my mind that, if you were speaking to the person face to face maybe they would converse with you perfectly normally, and the problem is that they just never got to grips with written communication?

The usual excuse that "i jus cant b botherd" is a poor one, as I think that if you do know how to spell and punctuate correctly, it actually takes more effort to spell incorrectly, and the real reason is that they just don't know how to, and have no inclination to improve.

Text speak can be annoying but doesn't bother me as much as general bad spelling and grammar.

I'm no expert but I think there is a basic level which is acceptable.
Maybe it does bother me a great deal! God I sound like a sad old git and I'm only 26!

what does it matter.... this is the internet, THIS is a chat forum... i spell badly, i use terrible grammer, on here, i wouldn't do the same in a letter, at work, or at any other time that i have to write a letter or such like!

get a grip on reality and stop spending your lives whinging about stupid little things which really DO NOT affect your life whatsoever, you will continue to breathe, eat, sleep etc when someone uses bad english on scoobynet because it is not life threatening!
