I though the government said immigration figures were falling now?....
National Statistics show they arent with 582,000 coming to the UK in 2004 - most from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan - so I guess these are probably coming to join their families who are already in the UK, so arent included in the governments immigration stats maybe?
No surprise to see an increasing amount of Brits want out - 120,000 (probably skilled, high earning) citizens have had enough and emigrated in 2004.
It really is taking the pis$ - I understood immigration figures were way lower than that, and most were from Eastern Europe (who to be honest I have no problem with as they bloody hard working, and a very small percentage claim benefits)

I am sure the figures can be massaged to say what anyone wants them to and i doubt we will ever know the true scale.
I am sure someone will be along soon to hint at you being racist for bringing this up - how dare you, Britian is great, there are no problems just happy smiling faces and people in the street chanting Tony, Tony, Tony!

I'm would'nt be surprised quite frankly ![Nono](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/nono.gif)
Seeing that police programme on TV a couple of nights ago and reading bits and bobs...the majority apparently are no longer london gangs committing pickpocketing/thieving, but foreign ones of which many are illegal immigrants like Moldovians and Croatians etc.
One group had been pickpocketing/stealing for several years and are let go - absolutely pathetic...stick em on the next boat back![Mad](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/mad.gif)
and these are the ones they know about
makes me furious

You guys, many of the poor countries are pissed about their people emigrating too, most of their skilled proffesionals leave the country once they have graduated for a better life in England etc, thats not good for theyre country at all. Its like how the welsh people were pissed off at england folk for buying sea-side cottages but not buying produce from wales, instead bringing stuff from england with them.
Even some of the carribean countries are having problems with illegal immigrants. Last I heard in Jamaica there we loads of haitians coming over causing a load of trouble.

Im with you little'un it was a disgrace, theres too many coming in legally let alone illegally and that program highlighted the fact that alot of them coming here do not want to work, they want easy money by commiting crime. It was good to see *some* being deported but yes if you commit crime back you go simple as.
The fact of the matter is this is a small island! Sure other countries *may* have issues but the difference in numbers is massive, I mean come on Audi how many brits bought/buy welsh cottages? certianly not half a million a year thats for sure!

How long will it be before this island sinks
I don't feel that this Government are looking after those of us living here already. I'm not saying there should be no foreigners coming into the country, but for heavens sake something needs doing soon or it'll be too late

At the risk of sounding too liberal (small"L") I've found that the majority of Bangladeshi imigrants who I've come across are very polite and also hard workers. Indiginous people in the UK would do well to adopt their work ethics.

The Laws on immigration have clearly not worked in the first place and are to blame for where we are today.
What you need is an open door policy, people can come here and stay as long as they want. All you do is NOT pay them any form of benefit whatsover (except of course, your first 4 hours or so in A&E, which all have a right to).
Under those cirsumstances, they either have to work, or they live off their families/friends. Either way, they are not wasting tax money.
If you, as happened in the '60's, then start placing restrictions on people, they will change their behaviour accordingly.
Give you a good example - my Dad, had a Wife and kids 'back home', but came over here in '62/'63 or so (seemed like a good idea at the time). Obviously worked here to pay his way (never took any form of benefit), then as Immigration controls were brought in, he realised that if he went 'back home', coming back to the UK was going to be a problem.
His solution, as well as many, many, other peoples' - bring the Wife and kids over. So, it is specifically due to Immigration controls that you have the pleasure of my dark face over here in the sunny UK, otherwise I would have been born elsewhere!
To be honest, my Dad's intention was never to stay here that long in the first place, but ended up settling here, as it became the best option for him, due to Immigration controls.
No doubt you will will not believe this, but lets look at an up to date real life example - Poles for instance, over here in quite some numbers, working away. I am not sure what benefits they are entitled too, but their intention seems to be to work.
Now, how many would you say would settle here and buy a house? In my view, hardly any. Why? Because they have free movement to go back and forth between Poland and here, to work, as they please. Plus to buy a house here, in their eyes, would cost a fortune.
So, you have the benefit of Polish workers, with hopefully few of the side effects of permanent immigrants, sounds like a plan.
Refugees is a separate issue. In my view, there should not be a single refugee landing in the UK claiming Asylum. These days, Airlines and such like are fined if they do not check over the paperwork adequately of their passengers, in other words, someone 'should not' be able to land at Heathrow and claim asylum.
However, Refugees are a fact of life, and should be processed, by the UN, in the nearest safe destination from where they are leaving from. The UN, to which I am sure we contribute to, should be the arbiters of whether someone is a genuine Refugee or not.
Genuine Refugees should then be apportioned around the World, to those countries that can take them. The UK should take its fair share of these, but also under the condtions that they have to learn the language, with minimal benefits, then be expected to work.
I can't see why that is so difficult and might make more Brits want to stay here. Perhaps its the weather that drives them away??

We are already the most densely populated country in Europe. as it gets worse, the problems will become more intense. Even the immigrants already here don't want any more to come in.
Economically and socially we cannot support the present levels of immigration.

lets face it, we have been screwed good & proper by tony, gordon & co. the nhs is shedding jobs right left & centre due to the lack of correct funding & crap management, old folks homes are being closed, and even if a place is available in a home if you own your own home you have to sell it to pay for your care. we bow down and obey every stupid law coming from the eu when everyone else takes no notice of them.
what really pisses me off is that at the slightest hint of a drought, famine or some other natural dissaster our government can suddenly promise millions in aid!
i,m a firm believer in the old saying "charity begins at home" lets get our own house in order first.

However much immigration there has been since 2002, I don't think that it has made us the "most densely populated country in Europe".
Now, if we just looked at London and the south east of England and compared the population density to the Netherlands the result may be different..... (But it would also probably be different if we compared population density of Amsterdam to the rest of the Netherlands).

You can take it from me that the stats are severely massaged, for example they count a family of 5 asylum seekers on the way in as 1 person, if they get removed or go home they are counted as 5. If thats not a fiddle i don't know what is.
To be honest no one has any idea howmany immigrants are here and regardless of wheather you think its a good thing or not, no one really has a clue... mainly due to a like of embarkation controls.

I have no doubt that figures are massaged, but to reach a density of 393 per square kilometre (as per the Netherlands) the UK would need to have a population of over 96 million.
Even accepting that there are people in the UK that the government/authorities don't know about, I don't believe that there are more than 50% more people in the country than are accounted for. The UK is NOT the most densely populated country in Europe.

I'm thinking about voting for the BNP. Do you think they'll accept me?

Why not? They've got an "ethnic" candidate in Bradford.
I suspect though that you might look a bit more "suntanned" than a Greek-Armenian and may be less acceptable to them.

I think you are getting your wires crossed. Assylum seeker applications are falling.
![](http://www.statistics.gov.uk/images/charts/261.gif)
The immigration stats for 2004 can be found in this report:-
http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/rds/pdfs05/hosb1405.pdf
Number of wives admitted from the Indian sub-continent:- 8095
Number of children admitted from the Indian sub-continent:- 1365
Do you still maintain that "most from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan - so I guess these are probably coming to join their families"?
By all means have a discussion about immigration, but might I suggest the use of facts?
In comparison there are approx 15,000 French coming to the UK each year:-

Those asylum stats falling claims are due to a very dubious exercise, which involves turning a blind eye to a large number of illegal immigrants in the UK in order to help the Govt keep their promise to reduce asylum claims, where by the Immigration service do not arrest anyone who is not already an asylum seeker. Therfore as the majority of illegal entrants to the UK only claim asylum when arrested, nobody actually claims asylum which = asylum claims are falling. The people are still here and still coming they are just not being counted.

I am not able to say anything one way or the other over the population figures douglasb, I was quoting what I had seen published and have no special knowledge in that respect.
I do however still feel personally that if this country is allowed to become more highly populated than it is, we are risking losing the special character of this country which would never be regained. I do not wish to see this happen nor do I want to see an even bigger burden on the working taxpayer who is getting hammered so unfairly.
