Default Mountain Bike Recomendations

Having just sold my Marin IFT hardtail bike I'm now in the market for a replacement.
This time round I quite fancy a fs bike with disk brakes. It will be used mainly on tarmac with occasional fine weather xc/single-track rides. I'm looking for something thats not top heavy, responsive and comfortable.
I've got my eye on a Specialized Stumpjumper FSR Comp. I haven't tried anything yet, so I'm open to your recommendations, especially for any current 'deals' going (I might consider a 2005 model if the price was right)
My budget is around £1500
Thanks in advance.

Giant Reign/Trance, Reign is better or a Scott Genius. Stumpys get good reviews, I've got a HT but never tried a full suss. If you fancy something a bit special lookup Litespeed Niota.

Most have lockout so it doesn't really matter.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, I'll check them out, keep them coming.
I haven't totally ruled out going for another hardtail, as I say I've never riden one yet so don't know how they compare.
I'm not to bothered about a few extra pounds, just thought a fs might be more fun for when I do go off road and as you say I would get one with lockout.
The current choice is bewildering with so many different designs, what works and what doesn't and is there a big difference in the feel of a bike between the different frame geometries?
I'm 5"10"" and prefer a solid planted feel.

Worth looking at Evans, they have still got a few 2005 Specialized Stumpjumer HT Pro's left, M4 frame XTR rear mech and XT hydraulic disc brakes for £1600, very light and a great XC bike. I've got a S Works M5 HT full XTR, Rockshox SID worldcup forks etc etc, really great bike and never let me down in the 3 years i've had it, the M4 Stumpjumper is a similiar bike, and would be ideal for what u need, i'd not both with full suspension, all it's gonna do is add weight and make climbing a bitch (and if you've got lockout on it then again it adds to the pointlessness of having full suspenion in the first place, unless your gonna be using it a fair bit off road)

Great on the Road as you can lock out the suspension, but great for a bit of off road, i have done 400 miles on mine, absolutely brilliant

Hi Guys,

Sorry to hijack the thread !!

I am looking to buy a Specialized Rockhopper Pro Disc bike.
But I am unsure about which frame size to go for either 19" or 21".
My inside leg is 34" and my height is 6ft1".

Any ideas ??

Cheers

Gaz

Depends what you want to use it for? The more you want the bike to move around underneath you, the smaller the frame?

I'd say a 19" but you really need to try them 1st, as I have a 32" inside leg and am 5'8 and I have an 18" and a 16.5", both bikes fit me fine but I use 1 on the road and the other in ditches.

thanks guys.

The bike will be use for mainly off road. The last thing I want is a bike too big.
I already have a road bike for road use but I want to get back into mountain bikes.
I guess I need to get myself to a bike shop and try one for myself.

Cheers

Gaz

Def 19" I'm on a 19" S Works M5 and i'm 6ft 3, to be honest it's a bit on the small side and i could do with a 21, seat post is a long way out but thats what i like, a nice small frame, makes the bike lighter and more responsive

Blimey, I'm 6'1'' and have a 31" inside leg!

19" frame is just right for me.
