........on TopGear now, has just said the Mk3 GXL Cortina used on Life on Mars shouldn't of had a vynal roof, I am pretty sure the Mk3 GXL I had had one, it got ripped by the monkeys at Longleat in 1984.

actually the Cortina in Life on Mars was incorrectly badged.... it had different badges on the back to the front
it also had false plates and IIRC the reg number changed during the series...
as for BVR's - Ford were a law unto themselves... if you walked into the showroom and ordered it, you could have had it - so yes it may have had a BVR
according to the BBC's website it is a 2000E... but it clearly has GXL badges...

Anyway, who's to say that the vynyl roof wasnt added later, my dad had his 1969 Capri 1600 GT XLR repainted and fitted with a Vynyl roof during it late seventies refit.
I had my MK1 Golf GTI fitted with one after some turd climbed on it, didnt look so bad seeing as the car was black and was better than footprints.

My Cortina MK2 1.6 Deluxe Automatic didn't have a vinyl roof
BUT
My Cortina MK3 GT DID!!! and I 'think' most GXL's and 'E's had too - the L and LX were without.
Lovely cars especially the MK3 GT!! Reg. No. was MRX 1L ..........

As a slight aside...
What was the idea with the vinyl roofs anyway? Was it supposed to make the car look like a convertible? Just don't geddit, always wondered about this.

My dad's red one had a black vynil roof, and his green metallic had a brown vynil roof.
Both went like the proverbial sh*t off a fork. Before that he had a Corsair 2000E of legendaery gearbox fame, and before that, always Zodiacs.
Mind, in those days, if you bought the fastest FORD in it's class, you had the fastest car on the road, in it's class.
