Top Gear chase cars
Have always wanted to know this. When they do one of there races. What car/cars do they use to keep up with the DB9 / 612 / Veyron??????
Does anyone know ?? I have always thought they must use a de-restricted RS6 / RS4 Avants.
I think they must use more than one car though.
Any thoughts ????

Seems to always be a Mondeo or Toyota Previa.
The races arent real obviously! They just get lots of shots of the cars ranting it past on the autobahn etc.
Still great entertainment - I hope they have another one of their eurotrips on TopGear next week, theyve not done one this series yet.

I presume you mean the long drive films they make, as opposed to the airfield stuff?
The long drive films must have some major planning behind them. Take Clarksons trip to iceland. He's carrying his own set of cameras, which I'm sure he knows how to use. They must have been positioned in lots of different places on route to film him going past, at least say 5 people, going way ahead of him. Then at least 2 chase cars to keep ahead, if possible, running the same risks as him from the police! On top of all that, literally, there's maybe a helicopter shot or two to get in the bag Quite a lot involved really, which is the bit I always find most interesting

I watched an interview with JC where he explained how they do them..... He assured the interviewer that the 'races' were honest as was the in-car footage and audio commentaries. The other video is taken afterwards when the route is re-traced.

Back in the Feb 06 issue of top gear mag (I happend to pick it up at my parents tonight) JC talks about effort that goes into them.
He swears the race itself is real and they try to make them a genuine contest. They use a Range rover as a chase car and get as many shots as they can "for real". They then retrace the route with extra camera crews to get more footage over several days. Then spend weeks editting it all together.
Personally I think it makes for good entertaining TV.
