Water Shortage!
Does anyone know where I can check to see what the current rules are with regard to Car cleaning.
My car is brand new and filthy but I have been told that im no longer allowed to even clean it with just a bucket of water. Is this true? I knew hosepipes were banned but is cleaning with bucket of water now also banned?
Strange thing is the local Jet Wash is still open/being used. Guess I will have to use that but my car needs a proper clean.

I don't know exactly where you are based but if you're in the south east, there was talk of a drought order but its been put on hold. So you can still use your bucket of water...

why no go down to a do it yourself jetwash and give it a nice rinse down.
take a waffle weave down don there with you and dry it properly afterwards
thats what i do.

I am in Surrey and was told by some there is a drought order but others say it has not been implemented yet.
I just want to be sure as knowing my luck I would end up getting a fine!

He, he.
Hosepipe ban.
Well two weeks into working in Dubai and no hosepipe ban out here, averaging 35 degrees during the day at the moment going up to 50 in summer - August. Needles to say they do not rely on rain or a rainy seaon!The place is very green and lush with irrigation systems all over the place, Pools aplenty and no water ban in sight. You only really see sand, sand, lots of sand when you head out of town.
I suppose it helps only having around 1m residents plus who knows how many building workers (usually Indian, Pakistani or Phillipino and there are a lot of construction workers!).
However the gov't owned and run aluminum smelting plants and power stations plant supplies the heat and leecy to the gov't owned and run desalination plants to create tap water from seawater. That’s what i am led to believe anyway
The tap water is OK to drink and does not taste that bad either!
Hosepipe bad in the UK, About time the pipes where fixed, as well as the leaks in the reservoirs and increased storage as allowed for and or try desalination. I would not want to see the poor old shareholders suffer with smaller permiums though so perhaps a bigger bill is the answer, or just do nothing!
I take it that does still rain in the UK, it was when I flew out?

I have trawled the Sutton and East Surrey site and the Drought order comes into effect on Saturday 17th May it seems.
However, after reading what you can and can't do it seems I can still jetwash my driveway - I've just moved into my new home (last Friday) and it has a steep driveway which is the only access to the house. the previous owner has let it go and its got a layer of moss/algea which is extremely slippery since the heavens opened this weekend
I'm considering it essential for safety reasons that its jetwashed clean!

Jay - Comes into force 17 May, but activities are prohibited from 27 May, that's the bit I don't understand.
From the doc above, it prohibits "the operation of mechanical vehicle washers" - what's that????
It even allows the washing of vehicles for safety reasons, but prohibits cleaning the exterior of buildings except for windows (doesn't allow for safety reasons??).

I think a quango was held to change the name from 'Carwash' to 'mechanical vehicle washer'
Am I right in thinking a driveway isn't considered a verge or 'other landscaped area', if so its OK to jetwash the drive!
that in exercise of the authority contained in the Drought Order, the Company hereby prohibits, with effect from Saturday 27th May 2006, the use within its area of supply, of any water supplied by the Company (whether by meter or not) for any of the following purposes:
the watering, by hosepipe, sprinkler or other similar apparatus, of -
(i) gardens (other than market gardens), including lawns, verges and other landscaped areas;
(ii) allotments;
(iii) parks; or
(iv) any natural or artificial surfaces used for sport or recreation; whether publicly or privately owned;
the filling (whether wholly or partially) of privately owned swimming pools, other than -
(i) pools designed to be used in the course of a programme of medical treatment;
(ii) the filling of pools where necessary in the course of their construction;
the filling (whether wholly or partially) of ornamental ponds other than fish ponds;
the operation of mechanical vehicle washers, whether automatic or not, with the exception of those which recycle water and as a consequence use less than 23 litres of mains water per vehicle;
the washing by hosepipe, sprinkler or other similar apparatus, of road vehicles boats, railway rolling stock or aircraft for any reason other than safety or hygiene.
the cleaning of the exterior of buildings, other than windows;
the cleaning of windows by hosepipe, sprinkler or other similar apparatus which is connected directly to the mains supply;
the operation of ornamental fountains or cascades, including those where water is recycled; and
the operation, in relation to any building or other premises, of any cistern which flushes automatically, during any period when those premises are wholly or substantially unoccupied.

It does seem strange that you cannot even use a bucket to clean the side of your building, are allowed a bucket to clean windows, but no restrictions on a driveway??

Gave them a call, even the recorded message told me the current ban effective 1st march doesn't ban the use jetwashes for cleaning patios and driveways, but the drought order effective 27th May does!

Paul H,
I seem to remember that there is a pool of fresh water (sweetwater) at the sea bed in the Gulf. In previous times the locals used to dive down to it and bring back sheep stomachs which they had filled up.
I always wondered if that was really true.
