Download iTunes and install on your PC. Then spend a bit of time importing all your (and your friends, aunties, uncles etc) CD's into it. Plug in your iPod and go for a cuppa whilst they all transfer. A little tip, most CD's import as Track 1, Track 2 etc. Once you have imported a disc, put it into an album (easy, I shouldn't need to explain) and then highlight the album and select "Advanced/Get CD Track Names" and it will automatically rename them based on the track length/sequence from files on the 'net. Another tip, in Preferences under iPod there should be an option to not automatically update or delete tracks. If you don't select the right option, should you erase any tracks from iTunes or your HD they will be erased from the iPod when next connected. I don't have one and am basing this on 3rd hand knowledge, but I think I'm somewhere near.
Alternatively, do as Daisy
I'll try and remember to ask my mate what site he's using. It's based in Russia and charges £1 per album IIRC

And get yourself a pair of decent headphones to do the iPod justice! The standard Apple ones are woefully awful. Tinny, bright sound with huge leakage (which is why you hear so much when sat next to someone on the tube!). Forget the trendy white earphones and invest in something like Shure E2Cs for about £60. You won't regret it.

The auto update and sync thing sounds like the same thing. As said by others, make sure the auto-sync is turned off. It's a nice idea but can cause problems, especially if you have music on your iPod that is not in your iTunes Library.

That site has been up and down a lot recently, I've heard of a few problems with it. mp3search seems better and more stable. There is still an issue about exactly how legal these sites are, but they have a lot of official backing (and for the time being, must be considered legal) - only Paypal seems to be playing silly buggers with them.

I've been using allofmp3.com for about a year and apart from it going down now and then, it's worked fine for me. I believe they have recently switched server platform, which is why they were down for a fair few days and why they state that downloads in non-mp3 format could take a very long time.

Limewire is fine as far as it goes. The software itself is not illegal, but the downloading of copyrighted material (i.e. music) without paying a fee is! Also bear in mind that Limewire is full of crappy spyware (because most people can't be bothered to use the 'pro' version) and you're also encouraged to open up your hard drive as it is a file sharing P2P network. My advice is to steer clear.
