New lawnmower advice needed

New lawnmower advice needed
Thanks for taking a moment to look at probably the most boring Scoobynet thread ever.
First off I should say I hate gardening but necessity (the missus) dictates that I have to cut the grass once in a while. While my garden isn't big enough to justify a sit on mower it still takes me bloody ages to do due to the fact that my current mower bogs down when faced with anything more than 2" long.
So what I'm really asking is petrol or electric, rotary or cylinder and any make model recommendations would be great too.
cheers.

Petrol, rotary a Honda. Superb......If you want lines get the one with a roller. Unless you have a huge lawn no need to get a driven one. The push type will save you money over a driven one! I've had mine over 20 years and still going strong, starts first pull and other than a new blade and some new rollers (this year) has needed nothing doing to it.

I agree with with above, honda's are the best mowers, start first time like the cars, i used one for 20 years with no problems, just service it once a year, ie change the oil, clean the air filter and sharpen the blade.

Only men could make such a meal out of buying a lawnmower!
Ours broke a few weeks back - I logged onto Argos, saw one in the price bracket I wanted to pay (with a £40 price reduction), booked it online, went and collected it (jumping all the queues with the Quick Pay machine) and had the lawn mowed within the hour.
It's a lawnmower - it cuts grass and collects it - unless you happen to be the head grass cutter at Wimbledon what else do you need it to do....?

Oh - the BBQ thing - would that be the thing where the women do all the shopping (food, drink, napkins, charcoal, etc.), prepare all the salads, marinate all the meat, layout all the crockery, invite all the guests, clear away afterwards and do all the washing up, while the man hangs around the BBQ in an apron with bare breasts on the front, being fed beer by the wife and turning over the meat only when it either a) catches fire or b) you're reminded to by the wife - whilst gradually getting more & more drunk.
Then at the end of the evening he comes up to you stinking of stake smoke and beer, dribbles down your neck and says something like "aren't you pleased when I help with the cooking"
Is that the BBQ thing you're thinking of?
(PS Mr DBW is exempt from this posting - he doesn't own an apron...)

CLEARLY a man only thread Pah! Women....
I bought a petrol mountfield - under 200 I think from Homebase.
Top banana so far - nice reliable briggs and stratton motor.
Couldn't justify the Honda although I dearly wanted one just to match the Fireblade Probably would have ended up dynojetting it or something equally silly

Cheers for all the advice GUYS.
Looks like it'll defo be a petrol model then, think Costco have a few Honda's in at the moment and they seem to be getting the thumbs up so far.
As for,
well, my current one doesn't cut grass, at least not very well. Hence my original post.

£100 petrol mower, Push jobbie - less to go wrong Jobs a good'un
If you want it to last, pay a bit more and get one with a galvanised or stainless steel chassis (latter looks very bling ). Cast Aluminium or plastic coated steel will not last as long.
Although you can make a £100 petrol mower last if your prepared to clean off the underside and hammerite it every few years (i.e never ).
Engines: Tecumesh are nearly identical copies to Briggs and Stratton, both are perfectly up to the job. Honda, well they do the same - cut grass. Just change the oil every year and watch out for stale petrol over the winter lay up.
Electrics - fine if you mow every week and don't let it get too long, otherwise forget it, they'll just clog up and burn out.
Oh, and keep those blades razor sharp, doesn't half make it easier with overgrown lawns

I guess I just generally don't believe in paying over the odds for something that has some wierd gimmick (I believe you boys call them 'gadgets'...?). If I need to buy a lawnmower (for example) I establish my budget, then I go to a shop and buy something that does the job for the budget I have. I generally don't feel the need to consult with people regarding the decision.
You're right - it is a bloke thing - a complete inability to buy a simple, pactical piece of equipment without consulting with friends, comparing who's is bigger/ most expensive and then spending days researching it on the web - Mr DBW is the same.

Unfortunately, the other half took a shine to it and nicks it to mow the big bits while I have to use the push one (Honda, of course "my other mower is a Honda" LOL) to do the small bits and do the strimming

I have a 3.5hp petrol mower that requires unleaded fuel only.
Filled my petrol can with super unleaded, just in case I need to top the car up at any time.
I have 3 questions...
1) I am wondering if I should have my mower remapped for the 99 octane and fit a cocklink as a precautionary measure?
2) What sort of bhp and torque gains should I expect?
3) Will the mowers wheelbase be too short for most rolling roads?
Heres hoping Mr Lewis will be along shortly to provide the definitive answers.

A proper BBQ is about consuming searing hot, charcoal encrusted meat, that's still bleeding in the middle, along with vast quantities of cold beer All the while impressing your mates with your culinary ability
PS: back on topic, we've got a Flymo that came FOC from MrsD's mothers, and the stepson's never had a problem with it

Hmmmm... Get a Toro Recycler - the best there is...
http://www.shortsofwhitburn.co.uk/products.asp?recid=62
Not sure of Ali-Bs remark about deck construction... ANY form of steel deck will rust over a period of time, hence it's only the cheaper models/makes that use plastic or steel decks. The serious and expensive bits of kit, like the high-end Toros, use cast alluminium - which obviously won't rust away.
Rust is the biggest killer of lawn mowers! Stainless, galvanised, etc. - it won't matter - the beating it gets from the stones, etc. will still cause it to rust.
Toro recyclers are brilliant - you mow your lawn without any bag or collection, the cuttings simply disappear into the lawn. Literally - it's quite amazing. I've not seen any grass cuttings since getting mine - a power-drive ("personal pace" or summut clever), electric key-start job....
Toro - Not cheap, but certainly the best - as 90% of leading golf courses will testify.
