This year's soft shoots will root readily dipped in rooting compound and placed in a suitable compost.. Do a tinternet search for the technique, I can't be arsed to describe it.

It'll take you years to get a decent plant that way, though... they're quite slow growing.

Cheers for the replies guys appreciatte the advice, £95 each to end up on the fire- wish you hadnt told me that now !!!

think I will just have a look at the local diy stores garden dept and see how much they are asking nowadays, sure the last time I seen them priced at £40 but there again I suppose it depends on how established etc it is.

thanks again anyway.

You ought to be able to get something quite established for about £15 - £20 - try some smaller nurseries rather than big, expensive garden centres.

There's one for £1750 at our local garden centre. But I think it's free delivery

There are a couple in my local centre going for even more than that!

Mind you the last one I bought was £20.

Most maples like acid (high pH) soil - red maples especially. Get some ericaseous compost or soil improver from the garden centre. That will help the cutting.
