As title. Getting a comp car soon and while I'm looking for some cheap limited mileage insurance want to keep my scooby off road. Do I still need to have it insured?

I know you can SORN with your tax, but I'm not too sure about insurance.. I would be interested to know too, as my car is parked up off the road and I'm due to cancel the insurance tomorrow

It's ok not to have insurance providing it ain't parked or used on a public road, somebody nicking the car could be a problem though, mine is uninsured in the garage at the moment, does anybody know if a policy is available which can cover theft only ?

You will probably pay as much for that as full cover.

My last car was insured through HIC and when I took the car off the road, I changed the policy to "Laid up" which still gave me the basic theft cover and also covered parts stored in the garage. It was only about £100 for a year.

House insurance if its locked in the garage
Laid up policies are rare these days, but you might get your insurer to reduce your existing cover to fire and theft only (for obvious reasons you need to keep this bare minimum unless you can afford to lose it)

It doesn't have to be laid up and on your property.
Road Traffic Act states it has to be insured (for at least third party risks) if used on the public highway, but anywhere else laid up there is no statutory requirement for third party or indeed own damage insurance. You could in theory have it laid up in a multi storey car park for instance but would have to have road risks cover to get it there and back. Trying to get cover for fire/theft whilst it is in such a place would probably be impossible for obvious reasons
