What songs for pub cover band?
My boy who plays guitar is putting a band together to play covers in local pubs. Usual mix of lead, bass, drums and vocals. No keyboard at the moment. They are working to provide a mix of songs through every decade from Elvis of the 50's to Chillis of today. Quite a challenge but they are actually quite talented so it could work out. No idea of crowd mix but I guess mainly 20 - 40 age group. But they would like input into suggestions of songs that would be popular. Please bear in mind band mix and no keyboard.
So what would you request? Thanks, David

I think it would be cool if they do what alot of bands do on the Live Lounge for Radio One, cover a song thats in a completely different style...
Like when the Stereophonics covered Dont Stop Moving - S Club 7, KT Tungstell covering Missy Elliot - Get Your Freak On
Could really help them stand out, plus people wouldnt expect it...

My mates got a band and goes well in the pubs and clubs around here, you cant go wrong with The Rolling Stones,Green day(goes down a storm),the Kaiser chiefs and a few guns n roses tracks. As they are mainly guitar orientated it makes sense to stick to songs more suited for guitar, and as they are pretty up-beat they get the crowd going and the guys also enjoy playing them.

older stuff..maybe some madchester stuff, mock turtles, oasis, charlatans, etc, saturn five by the inspiral carpets is also a good lively tune many people will remember.
and for maureen & trevor that sit at the back nursing halves of mild.....maybe some more upbeat Niel Diamond stuff....donnovan...doors, stones...

My mates bro used to be in a group called 'Wot No Drummer'... It's as it says... no drummer.
they used to play a load of classic rock stuff.... meatloaf, rainbow, gillan etc.
may be different if you don't have a keyboard player tho?
he then left to form a deep purple tribute band called deepest purple!!!!!!! his sweet child in time was just pure class !!!!!!!!
good luck to your boy and his band !

Soul is different to Blues - Soul is sort of Gospelly R&B. How can you compare Sam Cooke's 'Wonderful World' with Memphis Minnies 'Down in the Alley.' Pure Blues is just complete depressing ****e.......anyway Sweet Home Alabama always raises the roof

Everyone does Greenday an'all, thinking they can do "American Idiot" and "Basket Case" when in fact they do them just as ****ly as "Wishing Well" and all the other blues/rock standards. Some of the worst covers I've seen of recent times have been of Greenday. Let them try "Letterbomb" or "St. Jimmy"
99% of pub rock bands are utter crap.

Good question (back on topic)
If Rock n Roll is the theme I would suggest Green Door by Jim lowe (or shakey someone) - it's quite tricky but a great floor filler...
