Question Current Best TV?

Popped into the Sony Centre today and they had a fantastic 46" LCD TV for £3999 ........ now, it wasn't much more than 2 years ago that I watched a £8500 Sony 37" LCD in the Sony Centre amazed at the quality.

The price has halved and the TV has got twice as good!!! Of course, now, it is HD ready!!

I assume someone, somewhere, at sometime, actually paid £8500 for that 37" TV ...... but, it is now bettered by quite a margin by one costing half as much!

Every 6 months I look, I mumble, I wonder, but do nothing - which today makes me glad that I didn't do anything!

What is the current best TV in the market, at around £1500?? Is LCD at 40" better than a Plasma at 40"??

I keep returning to my 12 year old Sony 29" 4x3 Aspect and sit amazed that the picture is STILL better than any LCD or Plasma!! but, now, it's starting to get very close!!

Pete

I know .... I know .... I know .... I know .... but I must jump at one point or I'll be having one installed in my coffin!!

I really did consider that £8500 one in a moment of madness .... I really think I would have gone mad now, watching things get cheaper and better!!

I have decided that I would like one in for the darker evenings .... maybe a 37" LCD - the best that £1500 will buy .............. and then I will STOP looking at the progress they are making!!

I have just installed a Toshiba 42WTL66 in my livingroom.
A very nice set indeed and can be had for circ.£1600. Picture wise it knocks spots off my old Hitachi RP set (which would be expected) but isnt quite as good as my Beovision MX7000 (which is around 8 years old)
I was forced to change as my RP set was zapped by lightning and I could only put up with the smaller screen for so long.

My new TV installed.

I can sacrifice a little difference in picture quality when it looks that good switched off

Fujitsu 58 range are the current flavour of the month over on AV Forums...

42" £2700, 50" £3800. Picture reputedly better than Panasonics best offering with a £1.5k Lumagen video processor doing the hard work. Supposedly better than the market leading Pioneer PDP's too, although I am yet to see one well displayed as they are quite new to the market.

SED is on the horizon, but unlikely to hit stores for 18 months to 3 years

PSL,

Did you know that your hero is going to have two way screens fitted into coffins as well as our houses in the future to make sure you are well and truly gone. Just in case you might threaten the Government?

I have a 42" Sony plasma and a 32" Panasonic LCD. And to be honest, the picture quality on the plasma is better. The LCD seems to pixelate a bit more than the plasma.

The Sony plasma was £4500 a couple of years ago, and the LCD was about £1400 last year out here in Switz.

Ade.

The Plasma is a much better picture IMO.

I have neither, but couldn't part with 'that' much money for something that's got such a crap picture (LCD)

Anyone that thinks it's good needs their eyes testing.

I was looking at some LCD Bravias the other day in tottenham court rd and compared to a decent plasma they looked awful.

They'll open up and be much less boomy. I'd say they need moving a little closer together too, but without hearing them in that room I'm just guessing.

I recently upgraded from a sony 36" CRT (was top of the range when purchased) to a Pioneer PDP 506XDE.
The picture is noticeably better, even in stanard definition. HD is unbelievable.

With fooking loads of wire I lowered the existing sockets so as they were hidden by the table

I went semi-geeky and went on to the Dolby website. They are set at between the 22 - 30 degree spot from the centre of the room (it's a big room). It is livingroom and not a dedicated so some things had to be comprimised on

Get a Bang & Olufsen set-up.
Top quality gear. Mind you at £15.5k that my old man paid out a couple of years ago, it had better be !!

B&O are very pretty, but there it ends. They simply integrate other peoples technology into stylish casings. You can get much better sound and picture quality for less money unless looks are the most important factor in your purchase.

The hole in the wall to the right of my TV is for my Beosound 3200. I am not going to use my Beolab 4000s but instead run it through the Yamaha amp. Not that the speakers aren't good (they're great) but the wall would just start to look too busy.
I used to install B&O for a living. Cracking looking and sounding kit. Functional furniture if you will. I know other systems will give a 'better' sound but I'd rather have the style of B&O with 80% of the perfect sound.
