Quite simply he neither knocks on the door to deliver the news nor writes the letters to inform the fallens families.
The man is a coward, and for the life of me i can't understand the run down of the military budgets coupled with the increase in international involvement. We aren't a big player in world politics any more. The RAF is now smaller than the MET police force, yet we are away in more fields of operation than ever before. Yes we signed up for it, but not many would sign up for it again.

Oh! i have slipped the surly bonds of earth
and danced the skieson laughter silvered wings
Sunwards i have climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun split clouds-and a hundred things
You have not dreamt of -wheeled and soared and swung
high in sunlit silence,hov'ring there
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air
Up,up the long delerious, burning blue
I've topped the wind swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew
And, while with silent lifting mind i've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space
Put my hand out and touched the face of god
May you rest in peace
and danced the skieson laughter silvered wings

Not nice to hear
Dont really expect to lose an aircraft like a Nimrod either - 4 engines, but could probably fly on 2. Was lost in flight, not on take-off or landing - and apparently not shot down by a SAM so will be interesting to hear what happened.

The BBC report says 'operator error' at the moment anyway, not that that's much comfort to the relatives of those that died

Or maybe the taliban shot down the multi-million high tech plane flying at several thousand feet with their combined armoury of a couple of AKs and the odd RPG?

UB the Nimrod was born from the Comet, I'm suprised more haven't fallen out of the sky, although they did sort out the fatigue problem on the Comets.

I only know of two other Nimrods that have been lost, one at an airshow in Canada in 1995 due to pilot error, and the other that ditched in the north sea some time after.

The fatigue problems on the early Comets were caused by the same malaise that has subsequently crippled or killed every aspect of British industry The windows were originally designed to be bonded into their surrounds, the accounts department decided that they should be rivetted as it was cheaper. The stress fractures grew from the holes drilled for the rivets

There have been four previous crashes of Nimrods since 1980, two of them involving fatalities.
The last took place 11 years ago to the day when seven crew from Kinloss died at an air show near Toronto, Canada.
Very spooky.

UB, dont jump to conclusions to suit your own political agenda, you may well be right bt wait for the facts, planes crash, its **** but it happens, the plane doesnt know where it is in the world when it crashes, might be a hush up but I am sure it will come out if it is.

What makes it even sadder is that it could have been entirely avoidable . .
1)they should not have been there in the first palce . .
2)They should not have been on board an outdated and completely crap plane . .
..
3) Ejector seats or not . . .Its a tragedy . .

Don't believe that. Nimrods never 'crash' they are among the most reliable planes around, having flown millions of trouble free miles over the years.

That's bollocks, I know of at least two, one at an airshow on the other side of the Atlantic, and one that was forced to ditch of the south coast.

My dad used to fly Nimrod Mr2s, so I've been around them quite a bit over the years. He was based at St Mawgan though rather than Kinloss.
They don't have any ejector seats fitted. Some other aircraft of the time had them, the Vulcan had 2 for the pilots but the other 3 crew had to bail out of a hatch. IIRC the B-52 has ejector seats for all its crew, some of them fire downwards.
The thing is, usually Nimrods wouldn't be in a super hostile environment - like an AWACs. It's not like a Vulcan which might have had to penetrate deep into enemy territory at low level, Nimrods generally linger around at heights where they're not so vulnerable - and usually are protected by fighters if the area is dangerous.
