UK worse than 20 years ago - Official!
It appears now its not just Scoobynet moaners who are saying the country is going down the sh!tter, a new survey says that things have got worse over the last 20 years (when Maggie was in power of course). This coupled with the recent survey saying more people than ever want to emigrate, and you have a pretty poor future ahead.

The thing is crime is the number one problem (and respect), but the current Government policies will do nothing, and the future Tory Government policies are just as bad. The only way to sort this is to DOUBLE the number of prison places, but no party is willing to do that. That would cost a mere £3bn to do, a drop in the ocean of benefit payments (£150bn), NHS It project (up to £50bn and rising), ID card madness (£20bn and rising), and would so obviously sort the problem. Its enough to make you hang your head in shame

Discipline and a total lack of any stewardship for the country are the main problems IMO.
Everything done today in Britain is for short term gain and profit - who cares what happens in 10 years time as the managers and politicians today will be long gone with their large bonuses and payouts.

Getting rid of Labour and their welfare state crap is about the only way ahead.
The state of the country today has nothing to do with Maggie, it's Labour's problem and those who voted them in. I guess it was all those who wanted a nice easy life on benefits & council housing.
Just my opinion of course but no doubt I'll get flamed anyway!

I must be looking at a different link or something.
How can the "UK worse than 20 years ago - Official! " if the poll says only 47% thought it was a worse place to live, when 51% say its a better place to live or no better or worse?
Notwithstanding the fact that these polls can be biased and misleading. I mean come on, terrorism at the top of the poll?
Again is is opinion not a fact.

A more accurate title for this thread would be: "Given the chance to whinge in a poll, lots of British people did exactly that". The British have been whinging about crime and immigration since at least the sxteenth century (that is NOT an exaggeration BTW), so it's difficult to see how this is news. The chances that you will be killed by a terrorist act are vastly lower than the chances that you will die in a car crash this year, so why is everyone so worried about terrorists for instance? Nope, whinging poms whinging.

So I took him back to his old school - Chatham House. He was there in 1947 to the early 50s. The place was fantastic in his day and even when he went back in the 70s. It is now a shadow of its former self but still retains some nice old touches. Memorials in the old chapel in the roof of the school to the dead of both World Wars. Outside in the streets surrounding the school we were surrounded by boarded up shops and literally ankle deep ****, rubbish and fly tipping. My dad looked so sad and just stood there shaking his head in disbelief. He`s not some old stuffy tory rolly birkin type...in actual fact he was always a bit more left of center - but did his bit in the Royal Lanc Fusilliers (Which of course no longer exists). I love my country but we both feel that there is no respect and this was summed up by what we saw in this once average british town. I know things move on and change and that is OK ...if it is for the better. People are now materially richer but have never been spiritually poorer.
I asked him if we were wearing rose tinted spectacles. As many of us have a habit of remembering the good stuff. He was convinced that we were not.
1. The education system has seriously let the people of this country down
2. Thatcher started this move towards Americanisation - PC sh.t - people becoming more out for themselves etc. The country probably did need a bit of a shake up. Blairs job was to reverse this trend to a degree or to make sure that we didnt move futher towards the soulless american way of being. He has failed this country more than any other prime minster of the last 100 years.
3. Prison should mean prison. It shouldnt be particularly nice.10 years should mean ten years.
4. Young offenders who have been properly taught respect by the education system - because often parents wont- should be sent to a Boot camp situated on the side of a bleak welsh hill - where they could be reduced to tears and re-educated.
5. Immigration needs to be sorted. Britain is a nation of mutts - all our families were immigrants once. And immigration if controlled properly enhances a country...but the current situation is taking the p.ss.
6. Revamp the legal system - so the police stand a fighting chance.
If we get someone in power that takes these issues seriously and grabs the bull by the horns then this country could become the best place in the whole world in my view. Neither my dad or I hold out much hope. He said that he is quite glad that he will be gone quite soon as he dosen´t want to see what the place will be like 15years from now. He is a real decent old school chap. This is also why my future children will be born and grow up in Bavaria.
Our experience seems to be a microcosm of what is happening in England.
The whole thing saddens me and I am known for my positive outlook on life.

Can anyone remember this program where they took 10 a grade students and made them sit a 1950's maths, science and English exam? At the end of it not one of them got a A or B grade mostly scraping c's and d's.
Just goes to show how average our education system is.

Not saying all is a bed of roses in Germany. There are plenty of things that are not quite right over here.
However....Having met several German teachers and spoken to them I can say that teaching is a very highly thought of, well paid job that you have to train for for years before you finaly qualify. I think this is reflected by the general good behaviour and attitude of young people over here.
There are plently of young **** walking about not knowing they were born but as a broad generalisation people respect their environment more over here.

Spot on post Steve Whitehorn.
Despite the fact that the apparent standard of living these days, mostly funded by credit cards and the money has all got to be paid back-with interest is higher, everyone was a lot happier and thought of others. They were used to saving up for any luxuries and appreciated them far more when they got them.
There is little respect for others now and we live in a greedy and acquisitive society. Kiwi GT is not far off the mark either.
Nothing to do with rose tinted spectacles aither. just relating the facts.

Surely we are not a tiny minority who are brassed off?
I know I have a vote and I know that is meant to be my chance to have a say but who is going to change things?
I really despair.Don't like the way things are at all.

So who to vote for? Hmmmm. That'll be 'none of the above' so far. As someone else on SN suggested, make voting compulsory BUT have a 'none of the above' option. What's the betting that that would have most votes at the moment?

We need a new leader, and this is what he/she should do:
1. Stop wasting money fighting wars that have not much to do with us.
2. Tougher prison sentences for ALL crimes, and prisoners server the full sentence - OR - bring back hanging.
3. Cut all benefits and income support - if people want money they have to work and earn it, simple as that. There's plenty of litter all over the towns of the UK, so pay the unemployed £5 an hour to clean it up.
4. Turn the NHS into a pay as you go service, or have a multi tiered service to stop the hypoconriacs bleeding it dry.
5. Refurb derelict housing for the homeless to live in.
And the list goes on and on, lets get back to basics, erradicate crime, and turn England/the UK into a great place to be
Just a shame it will never happen in my lifetime

How is our relationship with the US vital to us?
They have got us involved in TWO recent wars, and have screwed us at every turn. The so-called "special relationship" gives them carte blanche to do as they please, but when do WE get anything from it?
And DON'T even go there as far as the two world wars were concerned.......

Clintons new deal
Say alot about Clinton. But I thought his benefits and welfare reforms were bang on
http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisf...863995,00.html
We need somone to push these sort of hard line reforms through, sooner rather than later.
Along the way, that political thinking has been lost. New Labour has tried hard, but has never felt able to reproduce the robustness of Clinton's measures in a British context. As a result, 16 per cent of households, representing more than three million people, are still workless in Britain, living off benefit, only down by an eighth over the past 10 years. Yet over the past two years, up to 600,000 east Europeans have found work in Britain. Too many British live on benefit for no better reason than they don't want to work and there is too little insistence that they show determination and resource in finding some.

The reponses to such questions/polls are tainted with more than a little nostalgia.
I can vividly remember when I was a kid and my grandparents similarly used to go on about the "good old days" and how much better things used to be - as I'm sure many others here can.
It's all very well having some idealistic (ie. unrealistic) romantic view of just how "great" things used to be, but I doubt many people would be queuing up to turn the clock back and surrender the far greater wealth, choice, technological and medical advances we enjoy today.
Gary.
