BBC NEWS | UK | Top Gear presenter 'nearly died'
The BBC has confirmed Mr Hammond had signed a two-year contract before his accident.
A spokeswoman said: "The contract pre-dates the accident."
She said the corporation could not confirm the return of Top Gear or any other future projects until it had received an update on Hammond's progress.

Course it won't be axed. It's a big fat cash cow for the BBC. And you know what? If the BBC did decide to axe it, the show would go lock stock and barrel to Sky or ITV, and the BBC know it.

How much more proof do you need? That's an official statement from the BBC I didn't make it up. They can't confirm that TG will ever return - in other words - they've axed it.
No consultation, no regard for the wishes of the presenters of the programme, those employed in it's making, or the viewers. The PC bullies at the BBC saw their chance to make a move with the Hammond incident and grasped it with both hands.

Unclebuck, i'll bet you £100 that Top Gear will be back on telly by the end of 2007. There, you can even make some easy money from your assertion now.

I suspect that compared to populist rubbish such as Strictly Come Dancing, Casualty, Eastenders etc Top Gear viewing figures would barely register.
The BBC doesn't need to worry about 'profit' because of the unique way it is funded (ie by us) This fact makes it all the more painful that just about the only programme that I find worth watching on the BBC has been removed probably forever.

nah mate - that just states that cannot confirm the return of TopGear. Doesn't confirm that it's been axed.
tbh, I can see what you're saying, but then again, the Beeb are well and truly sitting on the fence.
Besides, IF your're right, that will be the end of TopGear.... on the BBC
