Default Budget Home Cinema

Any ideas?

Now bare in mind I am no audiophile before encouraging me to spend £0000s for something I will use once a month.

Less than or around £200 would be best

Got a Sony all-in-one system myself. Ok paid a bit more than £200 for it but they're probably cheaper now or you could get a secondhand one. DAV-S800 cost me £600 new with multiregion, does the job for me

If you can stretch to £300, theres a lovely looking Denon setup on ebay at the moment.

If I wasn't skint, I'd put a bid in myself.

number 160046733397

Ends in 4 hours. Sod it, I think I will have a punt.

I don't think you really need surround sound for a good home cinema experience. Contraversial!

Yes you do.

Can't beat a 6.1 setup with plenty of power, big floorstanders and a good sub.
You need to rattle the sofa during explosions.
I can remember watching The Sixth Sense for the first time and in the dark, one scene is very intense and you are really drawn in, there is then a flash on the screen from left to right and something runs from left to right behind you on the rear channel.
Made me grip the arms on the chair I can tell you.

Cheers
Lee

I used to have all that, even had floorstanders on the rear channels. Just have a normal telly now, don't think I enjoy films any less. Of course one day I plan do the whole dedicated room / plush seating thing!

I have a panasonic sa-dt310 and a sony vpl cx6 projector, the surround was around £400 2 years ago, but im sure it will be a lot less now, its fantastic and really brings the films to life. add that to the 80" crisp screen, its a propper cinema experience

If you're only going to use it once a month, why not go to the bleedin' pictures, FFS?

Cool

Try for Bowers & Wilkins XT4's, XT2's, XTC & PV1
With the change buy an Arcam DV79 and an AVR300

You won't regret it...

I didn't

davyboy, I've just done a budget system having moved house. I went for an Optoma DV10 projector with integrated DVD player - projecting onto a beige wall, the Sony STRDE400 amp you mention, and a Sky box from Ebay, Freesat card from Sky. I also bought an Eltax centre channel, and used existing Eltax floor standers I had. I had some Gale gold monitors for surround but I replaced those with some cheapo Eltax smaller surround speakers and the Gales have gone to the computer with my old amp (replaced with the Sony because it wouldn't take the optical or coax digital feeds from the DV10 pj/DVD and my CD player, and was only Dolby Prologic with the mono surround). Manages fine without a sub and the room doesn't look overtaken by AV equipment - just move the projector out the way.

It is a bigger room (6mx5m) than the old house, but the setup manages fine, although I do end up near max vol on the Sony amp - no distortion though - so I'd say it is just big enough. A sub might rattle the windows a little better, but I don't like making too much noise and upsetting neighbours.

So it is cheap, but an immersive experience.
