So heat doesn't rise in your house then? I find mine is stewing upstairs but never gets warm enough downstairs.

You need to replace the crude on / off valves on the radiator with thermostatic valves. Set the ones downstairs colder than the ones up stairs and it will do what you want. About a tenner for each radiator or something like that.

Yes, if you know how to drain the system down, you could do the whole house in a day.

If you're not up to the possible plumbing, the answer is no, not easy.

Have a go at balancing the system first:

Turn off all radiator lockshield valves, those are the ones that DON'T have a **** on top to turn, just a cover. You'll need a small spanner or an adjustable to turn them off.

Now turn the rads you want to get hotter, quicker, on a couple of turns at their lockshield valves, and the othwers only on half a turn.

See if that makes any difference.

Oh, and check how much insulation you have in the loft. 6" is good, anything less, get it topped up.

Won't exactly the same thing happen if you put the (wireless) thermostat upstairs ? Note if you have thermostatic valves you must leave one radiator uncontrolled, otherwise the thermostat will call for heat, the boiler will power up but the water can never release the heat as it won't pass through any radiators.

I've got one of these, Honeywell CM67 7 day programmable thermostat

It's awesome, just put it where ever you want It also has a 7 day programme thingy with 6 switch points per day etc etc

Bob

PS, sounds like you need some stat valves too

It works like any stat. It'll control the temp' to whatever you want, where ever it is. It then relays any necessary signals to it's base station which is wired into the boiler. Very simple and easy to use

As Bob says we've got a Honeywell wireless thermostat - more info here

Our house used to get colder downstairs whilst the upstairs would be boiling, except the bathroom which is always freezing. We put a wood burner in downstairs and a thermostat on the rad in the same room then use the wireless stat upstairs. I put it in the bedroom in the evening as neither of us like the room to be hot when we go to bed, then move it to the bathroom overnight so that it gets the temperature up in there in the morning. It works really, really well.

I would always expect it to be 'hot' in the bedroom department whatever heating system was, or wasn't, installed....... and it's nice to hear that you get it 'up' in the bathroom on a morning.... arf, arf....

Well it's Friday innit......
