Wireless thermostat

Anybody use one and where can you get them from?
I heard them mentioned on the radio the other day and thought I could do with one. Apparently they allow the central heating thermostat to be triggered from a different room, ie could put one upstairs.
The upstairs of my house is always colder than the downstairs with no heating on so the thermostat only gets triggered when downstairs cools down meaning by that stage upstairs is like the arctic![Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif)
Manually sorted it out by turning off the radiators downstairs and setting the thermostat higher so upstairs gets warmed up when downstairs is fine. Not the best solution though because if downstairs becomes cooler it wont get heated.
How can you adjust central heating so its more balanced, ie want the radiators upstairs to warm the rooms a lot more than the radiators downstairs?
I tried just turning the adjustors at the end of the radiators from full on to say just before being totally off but they still emit loads of heat.
Want to get the central heating balanced now the cold weather is here as its either comfy downstairs and arctic conditions upstairs or its warm upstairs and like the Bahamas downstairs

You need to replace the crude on / off valves on the radiator with thermostatic valves. Set the ones downstairs colder than the ones up stairs and it will do what you want. About a tenner for each radiator or something like that.

If you're not up to the possible plumbing, the answer is no, not easy.
Have a go at balancing the system first:
Turn off all radiator lockshield valves, those are the ones that DON'T have a **** on top to turn, just a cover. You'll need a small spanner or an adjustable to turn them off.
Now turn the rads you want to get hotter, quicker, on a couple of turns at their lockshield valves, and the othwers only on half a turn.
See if that makes any difference.
Oh, and check how much insulation you have in the loft. 6" is good, anything less, get it topped up.

Cheers Alcazar. Got a British Gas engineer coming round Monday now under my HomeCare agreement to see if they can balance it and to get a quote for thermostatic rad valves as well but wont go with their quote as it will be sky high.
May try the adjusting over the weekend but I know when I had the lot serviced one of the radiators i'd mentioned as not getting very hot had the adjustor turned right down and the adjusting screw in the top of it was stuck and needed the engineer to break it off and put a new one on. May be others knackered like that too although all the radiators do come on now, just don't want to bust any of the valves adjusting them myself. At least its not cold upstairs now with my current temporary solution![Smile](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)
May also see if the engineer can move the thermostat to a more suitable place instead of right by the kitchen.

Note if you have thermostatic valves you must leave one radiator uncontrolled, otherwise the thermostat will call for heat, the boiler will power up but the water can never release the heat as it won't pass through any radiators.

Very nice, how does it control the central heating though say if you place it on a wall upstairs? Oh and googled stat valves lol, yep its those that might need replacing too (or at least the tightening screw) as one was jammed shut on one radiator.

It works like any stat. It'll control the temp' to whatever you want, where ever it is. It then relays any necessary signals to it's base station which is wired into the boiler. Very simple and easy to use

As Bob says we've got a Honeywell wireless thermostat - more info here
Our house used to get colder downstairs whilst the upstairs would be boiling, except the bathroom which is always freezing. We put a wood burner in downstairs and a thermostat on the rad in the same room then use the wireless stat upstairs. I put it in the bedroom in the evening as neither of us like the room to be hot when we go to bed, then move it to the bathroom overnight so that it gets the temperature up in there in the morning. It works really, really well.
