Yes you can claim as long as it's not cash or jewellery, up to 100 x value of a first class stamp.

Sorry thought the link might help - it does tell you which form you would need to make a claim (P58 for inland mail) and some other info.

The bit about claiming up to a maximum of 100 x value of a first class stamp (£32) I know from my experience as a Post Office Manageress

The only 'extra' you get from sending Recorded Delivery is that it is signed for upon receipt - the compensation level is exactly the same as normal first class. If something is worth over £32 then you need to send it Special Delivery in order to claim compensation.

Compensation is not guaranteed and you may be required to show proof of the value of the item, receipts etc.
Without proof of posting you usually get a goodwill gesture of a book of stamps.

No, but I'm reading "Going Postal" by Terry Pratchett for the third time, and it's a terrific return to form. Unfortunately, he followed it up with Thud, which wasn't funny enough, and was too cynical.

Even if you send it special delivery you'll have big trouble getting any compensation.

I once sent cash insured to £400 I think, and it was 'lost'. The PO tried to claim I was a liar and never sent it, denying any knowledge of it.

Even with my proof it took me 3 months to get the money back.

Terrible company ot deal with.

This was 3 years ago, when they were sinking.

I've got a claim in at the moment for an overseas pack that's been lost or nicked. International Signed For. Problem is you have to put the customs form of front of pack with value and, of course, that's just an invitation to half inch it. At least that doesn't apply to EC any more.

david international signed for is a waste of time to be honest as you can only track it it till it leaves the country though it does have to be signed for at the otere end. make sense? no? me neither. airsure, if its available in that country, can be traced up to delivery but doesn't get a signature.

But on the other hand I have got it insured for £200 and I expect to get this back even if it takes some time. I have the UK PO receipt here and lots of e-mails from Namibia saying it hasn't been received and as far as I am concerned it's up to the Royal Mail to liaise with Namibia PO and provide evidence of delivery. I can't really afford to send pack by one of the courier companies when insured small packet airmail rate is about £10. Pain in the **** though dl

i understand where your coming from David, I'm a postmaster and think the international services are not up to scratch, but then again i suppose the service is also dependable on the recipients postal system. hopefully you'll get it resolved and it will turn up!

Thanks Ron - have a word for me old chap

Yeah I can't say I am over impressed with Royal Mail International. Yesterday they sent back my carefully completed claim form asking for Proof of Value of goods and description of item. In fact I had sent copies of e-mails with value stated along with a copy of the customer's credit card voucher as well as a detailed item and package description I explained this to a gal at customer services who couldn't understand what was going on. And she didn't know why they had asked for Paypal details as this was nothing whatsoever to do with Paypal (it wasn't an e-bay purchase!!). But I'm not giving up.......... dl
