Thumbs down Rip off prescriptions

My mother has been paying £6.90 (or whatever it now is) for a weekly repeat prescription of 250 ml of Aquasept, a skin cleanser used to get rid of skin bugs before and after surgery. She was advised by her GP to keep using this after contracting MRSA while in for a minor opp. She's being getting it for a couple of months now, so say about £60 worth. I did a quick search and you can buy the 500 ml bottle from express chemists for £2.95 with the 250 ml costing a mere £1.95!!

I had an operation on my back, so therefore needed some dressings to cover it. Luckily the nurse at my surgery advised me to go to the chemist as I could get the same dressings for 17p each. Prescription would have been £6.90 per 10.
She must have liked me

Just shows you though.

I think another point being that her GP could have prescribed up to 2 month's worth on a single prescription.

Didnt know that David, I guess it pays to be aware of these things, even with your 'friendly' local GP.

You can also go into the chemist and pay £30 or so, and get a prescription waiver for 3 months. i.e. you get as many prescriptions as you like for the 1 payment.

£30 would still have been more expensive in this case Charles, but I'm sure it would save you money in most cases.

RIP youve been ripped off mate.

We have our own medical centre pharmacy and when someone comes in like your mother would have done, we always advise them to buy privately if it is cheaper. I guess this just boils down to which pharmacy you go to and which pharmacist you meet at the end of the day.

If you pay for your medicine, next time ask the pharmacist if it works out cheaper not buying off prescription, they should tell you.

My GP always prescribes me two months of tablets in one go so that I save on prescription charges, he's good like that I get on well with him anyway, he calls a bum an @rse, drives an Impreza STi and does the occasional bit of rally marshalling

My wife contracted MRSA in hospital. They are not interested. Once you are discharged, you are on your own. You pay, unless you can persuade your local practice to take the hit.

definitely 3 months; I know from being on a 6 month course of ursodeoxycholic acid (bonus point for anyone who knows what that means I've got!), they confirmed that 3 months at a time is max perscription. The only other pescription I've had in the last 15 years, the GP told me "buy it over the counter, it's cheaper than pescription charges".

The reason that cheap drugs are a rip off on prescription is because it is an average figure to balance out the cost of more expensive drugs.

Couple of examples worked out to the maximum monthly doses:

Certain anti depressants i.e. sertraline are approx £50 per month.

Combivent (nebuliser solution) for severe asthmatics £60 per month.

Atorvastatin (anti cholesterol drug) for actual or potential heart patients £30 per month.

Clopidogrel (alternative to aspirin) for potential strokes, angina, heart attacks £35 per month.

Durogesic patches (Morphine patch for chronic pain e.g. cancer sufferer) £200 per month.

Xenical (stimulates fat elimination) Used for the treatment of fatters, sorry, chronic obesity £40 per month.

Viagra!!! £50 for 8 maximum strength tablets.

Some prescriptions can even cost over a grand.

Remember most of the above are prescribed for the patients lifetime.

So yes some prescriptions seem a rip off but others are a bargain.

Also you have to pay for scroungers/kids/pregnant women and the elderly. Approx 60% of prescriptions are given free.

As stated earlier most GPs and pharmacies will advise you if a generic brand is available cheaper so it is both her doctor and her pharmacy that has let her down.

What did you think? All medications cost equal to or more than £6.90?

You've been a dip****. Face it, learn from it and move on!

Yeh and risk having some chronic ingredients in them.

The best place to get medicine from is European countries. Cheap but similar to our branded stuff.

Rather hypocritical of me but we were looking into the indian market for import of medicines.

But looking at the European market, it is even better. You get the same for much less
