How much would they need to pay you?
My brother in law is a long distance lorry driver, driving dangerous loads.
He has the chance to go to Iraq to drive these dangerous loads, fuel, chemicals etc. this chance involves him going for months of training and licences which he has now passed,and then going to Texas for specialised "anti-hi-jacking" training.
Then he would go to Iraq for around 16 weeks at a time, (thats what his contract is for).
He is expecting around £10,000 per week in payment for this.
He is hoping to do a few of these contracts and then start training to be a commercial pilot with his savings.
My wife and his wife are terrified that this is just too dangerous, what do you think, would £10k per week justify this risk as it will tranform their lives whatever happens.

16 weeks is a while aint it - but, s'pose you would earn loads in that amount of time - i reckon id take the risk, iraqis only target our military, and americans only target our military

I know people who have been into Iraq escorted by the army, and it was still very dodgy. You'd have to be nuts to go in unescorted. It sounds too good to be true, so it probably is!

We do work for Iraq (Tv Transmitters)
and we sold some equipment to someone who went over there for 4 days.
Lets just say he did very well out of it.
I asked him would he go back - his answer.....Not a feckin' chance!!!!

If you watch a film called 'The War Tapes' which is a documentary filmed in Iraq you would see that these trucks are regularly trageted because they don't shoot back unlike humvees.

That was for British Army Ltd..... If you arent escorted or at least issued with a side-arm then Id have thought that it was just a matter of time. I can shoot and I have an HGV licence but even though the contrat payment is attractive the contract term is just too long.

When he's driving one of these lorries how many blokes is he with?
160k (before tax?) for 4 months work thats not bad, I suppose the best thing for him to do is to speak to others that are doing this.
I wouldn't like to do it, i can't imagine the anti-hi jack drill being anything different than foot down and drive through it.

Did anyone see the video of that convoy on the news? 3 or 4 trucks were being driven by civvys, and escorted by an American HUMVEE, took a wrong turning and drove down a residential street, of somewhere they knew wasn't friendly, only to find a dead end. They turned around and drove back down the street, only to come under fire. One driver was dragged from his truck and shot. The truck driver who had his camcorder running lay down in his cab, by the pedals, and got away with it. The yank escort just drove off and left them.
Go through that for 10k a week? 100k a week wouldnt get me near the place.

There was news last week that the largest contrator is pulling all its people out due to murders, snipers etc. 10 grand a weeks not good if your not around to spend it........

I can see how money makes it very tempting but i really don't think it's worth the risk.
I bet the army wouldn't care if you came under attack either, they are there doing an even more dangerous job and they aren't getting paid anywhere near that sort of money, so I guess they see the drivers as greedy w@nkers and really couldn't care less if you get shot.
