emailed HR and they've told me i get a corporate discount through Vision Express £14 as opposed to £22. But i was under the impression its free under the law, and you also get a contribution for the cost of glasses???

As you use a computer, by law you are allowed a 5-10 min break every hour. Eye tests payed for too.
I asked my boss for both. Got told to P1ssoff !!

If using a computer is a significant part of your job your employer has to arrange an eye test if you ask them do do so (they dont have to offer). After the first eye test they have to pay for repeat tests at intervals recommended by the optician.
They only have to pay towards glasses if the optician states you require glasses specifically for VDU work, and not for anything else, inclduing reading or driving - this is fairly unusual.
HSE website - HSE.gov.uk has lots of leaflets you can download.

DSE/VDU’s
Am I entitled to an eyesight test if I work on a VDU?
Yes, if you are a display screen “user” as defined in the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations. You will be a “user” if you habitually use a VDU as a significant part of your normal work. If this applies you can ask your employer to provide and pay for an eye and eyesight test. There is also an entitlement to further tests at regular intervals; the optometrist doing the first test can recommend when the next should be.
