Default Google=Big Brother??

I was in America last week and saw a programme on Google and how they are logging information about the people that use the search engine. It appears to be causing a big stink out there

Turns out Google record every single search made by you and associate it somehow to your computer. Every single search that has ever been done on Google has been recorded.

In fact over 10 people have been convicted of murder based on their Google searches prior to a crime taking place i.e. making searches such as "how to dispose of a body" "local rubbish dumps" etc etc

Anyhow they showed a piece of software on the TV programme that basically hides your search activity from Google. I installed it on Monday and have been using it....today Google cancelled my Google e-mail account and said that I have fiddled with "the" log file and this is against their "policy" therefore my account has been closed.

Do you think I should call Scully and Mulder?

I have trouble understanding how anyone could think they don't track your searches.

Of course they track - the info is worth a lot of money to advertisers. Want to have a guess what Google pays Mozilla for having Google as the default search engine in the Firefox browser?

How can they track searches & log them to individuals if that individual just uses it every now & then ie not registered with Google at all?

Quite easily if you have access to enough computing power (which they do). Every visit to every website you make leaves an electronic footprint. Most people are a) not aware of this b)don't know how to reduce this footprint c) don't care.

Online privacy is something people take for granted, when in reality it is far from that. Working for an IT security consultancy, we've helped to track down professional hackers in Eastern Europe and these guys really do know what they are doing - even then it was eventually possible to find the.

Have a look at Scroogle for more information. Use their Google Scraper if you want to submit anonymous searches to Google.

I've been using the same methods to trace User's pseudonyms in this forum and people who leech stuff off my webspace
