Unhappy Extinction Threat.

This might be a bit serious for here but I'm posting it up anyways

I have posted this up, as I would hope there are members of the SN family who might be interested in the story below (which was highlighted in the Daily Mail).

In Borneo, 1000 of these gorgeous creatures have died in chaos cuased by forest fires this year. Some have burnt to death, some have suffocated and some have starved because of the blazes, most of which were deliberately started.

Many adult Orangs have been forced to approach human settlements in serach of food for their babies, only to be attacked and killed with machetes for damaging crops.

BOS ( Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation ) then find their orphaned babies in the forests and try to nurse them back to health.

The total orangutan population is feared to have fallen below 60,000. At the current rate of destruction, within a decade the only orangs left in the world will be in zoos, or rehabilitation centres.

Orangs are one of the closest relatives to humans, sharing over 97 % of our DNA, and are the only great ape not to come from Africa. They are also the only tree-dwelling ape, and the largest tree-living mammel in the world.

Conservationists estimate the population is dwindling at a rate of 6000 per year. Orang populations are slow to recover as the average female only gives birth once every 8 years, meaning she will have a maximum of 5 babies in 40 year life span.

I've signed up to BOS UK, and we also annually sponsor/support Monkey World in Dorset, who care for rescued and abused primates.

If you are interested in helping, take a look at the links below..

Whats sadder is small animals, frogs and birdlife is pretty much extinct in many urban and suburban areas in the UK thanks to selfish cat owners letting their pets out to hunt

But hey its worth it when the little b@stard comes back in for food going "meoow"

Love Orangutangs, brilliant creatures

Less apes in the world means more housing though surely?

unfortunatly people seem to have favourites when it come to animals being killed etc, everyone seems to love elephants but all they do is cause destruction to hundreds of trees as they eat everything in sight! and its the same with orangs people just like them, what about all the small marmosets and tamerins, there are alot fewer of some of those in the world i bet aswell as many many more species, its just some get more publicity than others!

Cool

A much bigger threat to the balance of the biosphere is the amount of microscopic species going extinct, but no ones gives a **** about them, so the WWF and others harp on about pandas and orangutans and tigers etc. Easier to get people to cough up for something magnificent like a tiger.

Hey ho

But if they can't be seen with the naked eye..... how do they know that they're 'going extinct'???

I'd rather cough up for a Tiger than a 'naked to the human eye' bug

Saving cuddly monkeys makes you feel all good and warm inside, but addressing the problem of why their habitat is being destroyed in the first place is much more difficult and no fun at all
