Unhappy Battery question

My newphew asked me a question last night, "Why does it take so long for my mobile phone to recharge when I've plugged it in? Why cant it just suck all the electricity it needs in 10 seconds?"

I was stumped.

"Because you use it too much".

Simple answer.

He's very patient to say 10 seconds why not 1 second, or instantaneously?

To pass that electricity would require a high current, thicker wire, much bigger, heavier components in the phone. This would cause electromagnetic radiation which might wipe the SIM card and damage other adjacent electrical equipment, etc, etc. Also the internal battery components wouldn't last long.

But apart from that, nothing.

'cos if it did the temperature of the planet would rise by at least 26 degrees.... And does he want to take the blame for that. I don't think so

So how much juice is used by, say, a 6 way adapter that's plugged into a wall socket but has a TV, DVD, VHS, Sky + and a lamp, and why doesn't that require thicker cables and rise in temp. by 26 degrees when they're all on at once?

It must be down to some sort of 'absorption' rate no ?

??

That's down to how much current is drawn by the appliances plugged into the distribution board, and the fuse in the plug.

Were not talking about powering something when plugged into the mains, were talking about charging a battery that you want to last over a period of time.

Cheers

(Still confuses me that more current is drawn by the 6-way than a single but doesn't rise in temp much or require the thicker cables mentioned)

It appears that a solution already exists (as detailed in ANDYC's posted link) although it appears to be limited to burst charging up to 70%.

It shouldn't.

The 6 way adaptor still has a 13A fuse in the plug so thats all its rated for, hence no need for any thicker wire than a 3 bar heater with the same 13A fuse in the plug.

Just don't run 6 kettles off the thing
