Due to one or two incidents and a touch of slackness here and there, my MD is wanting to look at fitting CCTV within our factory to aid in sorting these issues. Are there any legal restrictions on this plan - basic human rights and all that?

As already been posted, it needs to be registered with the ICO due to Data protection act and suitably signed + other best practices to be legal. It's usually in your employee contract about monitoring or right to protect business interest blah blah. Tbh there is very little if anything you can do regarding non covert cctv in the work place providing it's proportionate to what it’s installed to achieve. Even covert monitoring is possible without informing staff but only if a serious crime is suspected of taking place.
