Cat Food...

What would you feed your cat to give it the best chance of a long and healthy life ?
Our one year old is currently on one sachet of Whiskas "Oh so meaty / fishy" a day, mixed with Hill's Science Plan biscuits.
A friend who's a vet says that Whiskas is full of salt, and not good
She says he could live off just the biscuits ![Sleep](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/sleep.gif)
I don't want to sound soft but he absolutely loves Whiskas "slop", as we call it - its one of the highlights of the day for him
![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
Are there any decent alternatives out there ? Is mass produced Whiskas really that bad ?
Thanks
Matt

Our 8 month old is on 3 sachets of whiskas a day, I'm thinking this is too much but I can't say no to him ![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
On the other hand, our 9 year old cat seems more than happy to eat a solid diet of IAMS Senior dry biscuits and doesn't seem to do her any harm.
Edited to say the young one goes crazy for the whiskas slop, definately a high point in his day![Stick Out Tongue](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif)

My two cats have a bowl of Iams dried and a bowl of Sheba wet food, twice a day. They are fine. In fact my last cat lived to be nearly 20 years old

It doesnt matter if you feed cats biscuits and 'meat' or just biscuits.
Just make sure that
1) If you only feed a cat biscuits, there is always plenty of water for them
2) never feed cats just meat as the biscuits help clean their teeth - if only that were true for humans
3) Dont try making your 'own' catfood. Tinned stuff might be full of stuff we wouldnt eat but it is supposed to be 'balanced' and my cats have lived long enough...

My old cat used to love Hoola Hoops and came rushing in from wherever if she heard a packed being opened! And she'd eat more or less anything. Have been told by the vet that biscuits are usually better and my new one seems quite happy on them. Did once try her on tinned food and she got so constipated she couldn't/wouldn't eat and had to force feed laxatives - not easy.

Ours lived for 18 years on dead birds, mice, cheese, bluebottles and his own vomit so basically any old ****, long life for a cat is about avoiding motor vehicles, kids with fireworks and big dogs.
Oh and Dillon, next doors Rabbit, found him with his head in its chest cavity, went for me when I tried to remove the carcass the little ****, do not underestimate a Ginger Tom with blood lust, he later honked the lot up next to a radiator, eyeballs, fur the fookin lot.

Yep Molly is still with us, the kitchen still smells like a French Cheese shop in August, she needs a haircut but we have not got round to booking her in and sometmes its better not to see 'What lies beneath', the Ferrero Rocher growth on her back being the main one and the supersized nipped being the other.
She still manages to eat anything she finds and how does a blind dog hide turds so a cautious sighted man cannot locate them without the aid of a training shoe ?

Whiskas in jelly half a tin each a day in 2 servings topped with Go cat biscuits.
Pack of 24 tins in Pets at Home for £9.89. Used to give them Felix but looks really cheap.

Ask Leslie - He's got a 21 year old cat ![EEK!](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/eek.gif)
Our two (12) live off the science plan diet food (They used to be on the normal stuff until Gav became the biggest cat in Banchory - 8kg - He's now down to 5.5kg
. )
They seem fine and always look forward to meal times
.
Mind you it does look like cardboard would be tastier.

Mate works at Masterfoods so i get my whiskas dirt cheap.
Feed her on Whiskas Pouches, 2 or 3 per day as she's a very active cat and dried biscuits. with plenty of fresh water and catnip mice to chase around

ps Don't fall for the old wives tale that cats will only eat as much as they need.
You could pour out a kilo of food for Gav and the fat **** would eat the lot.

My Auntie never used to feed her cat, cat food at all. in fact i dont think her cat ever touched the stuff ever in its long life
Cornflakes in the morning (i'm serious) and fish or chicken at night with some veg.
That cat lived until she was 22 - i'm sure the diet helped.

Our cat gets a very wide selection of the various cat foods since like any human his tastes change and he does not like the same thing all the time.
He is coming up to 22 years old and is still fit and good looking too.

My two get Iams plus anything else they can scavenge:
Cheese, Tuna, Ice Cream, Yoghurt, Crisps, Prawns, Crispy Duck, Chicken Jalfrezzi (I kid you not!), Blackbird, Rat, Starling...

One of my daft cats (dogs?), he get 1.5 pouches of whiskers and a few biscuits per day, plus anything we leave lying about the kitchen, licking harderned fat from the frying pan is one of his favourites ![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

Just biscuits for ours, she gets oh so messy if she has wet cat food.
Plus she seems to enjoy, leaves, flowers, imitation coal off the fire and whatever takes her fancy, other than eating the biscuits the other stuff usually appears again some time later.

I suspect the occasional taste of human flesh helps, Barney was apt to launch out from behind the setee, grab your leg and sink his teeth in, it was a subtle hint that we may like to feed him about now, he did it to my dad once as he must have thought it was me or our kid (never my mum), I was walking back up the path from the shops and was greeted by a flying cat, he never did it again, my bother was the most attacked and even though the cats been dead for four years he still casts a wary eye at the most likely ambush points before entering the room when at my mums !

Belive it or not,but my cat can easily finish my leftover,Madras,or Vindaloo.
But she gets Whiskers in the morning around 7am then Iams at night around 6pm.Around 11pm she gets a bowl of Iams dried food. She also comes in handy as a Alarm clock on a morning, she knows when its time to be fed.

swapped our two from whiskas / felix meat onto Iams without too mcuh of a problem. One of our is susceptible to dental problems so the dry food is better for them for teeth cleaning (not to mention our bank balance everytime she has to have a teeth clean at the vets!!)

We came intot he kitchen one Christmas to find ours draped over the cooked Turkey in a kind of love/feeding embrace, kind of put us off having a large Ginger Tom on the Christmas Dinner, he wasnt that fastidious as felines go in his personal hygeine, always covered in blood (sometimes his own from fighting, usually something not fast enough), usually covered in Burrs (Stick green bubos as they were known when we were kids and oil, mainly from scratching his back on a twenty year old Capri 1.6 GT-XLR sump plug that leaked making him look like a skunk !
Here he is in his younger (pre Elvis-esque) days, say awwww
