Ha ha.
Just started again myself today after a lay off of about 2 years.
a couple of years ago 300lbs bench pressing was the norm.
today i lifted a fraction of that and i feel goosed.
Give it 2-3 weeks and you wont be as bad.
To recover quicker cool down after a workout on a running machine (gets rid of the latic acid) and take a good whey protein shake along with some L-Glutamine.
I found that this helped my recovery.

Hi,
Dont over train, 3 times a week is good as long as you are getting some quality time at the gym, keep form in your exercises (dont try and lift heavy weights just because Schwarzenegger next to you is lifting 5 times what you are), get a training partner so you are always pushing yourself (friendly competition is helpful) and keep positive about your training.
It's an annoying past time! I spent a year training 3 times a week and went from 1 clean rep max @70kgs to 130kgs bench, training around 110kgs for multiple sets of 10 reps etc. Biceps went from 20kg ez bar preacher curls to 55kgs, I thought I was making good progress but hit a wall where I had to then start taking supplements to get more improvements.
Now due to work commitments over the last year, the gym has been put on the back burner, haven't been for 8 weeks now, lost size and definition. Almost feel and look like a fat pasty. You can spend years in the gym making gains but take time off, just a few months and the gains start to drop off!!
The good thing is, at least your muscle should have some memory so training to get where you once were takes less time compared to getting there in the first place.
Try and also get as many "lifting your own body weight" style exercises in as possible, chin ups etc. This will help with real word strength etc not just having strength that will allow you to lift a heavy weight in one restrcitive position, free weights are also better for this than machines.
Have fun!

Train one day on, one day off, or...
Do a different body part each day to give your self a rest and it won't hurt as much imho.
I also agree with kammy, legs can be a nightmare. If you do too much on your legs you might end up being unable to walk the next day
It's also not uncommon to leap out of bed in the middle of the night with cramp.
