Ridiculous. If they'd left them alone, ther bees would have moved off somewhere else.
And anyway, bees are almost all non-aggressive and useful creatures, so why kill them?

I must admit I laughed, even though it was a bit cruel.
Bees swarm in the spring/summer when newly hatched queen bee takes some of the bees from the hive and goes off to find a new home. I used to keep bees so I used to get swarm calls quite often, where I'd go out and try to collect them. I never had a swarm that would have been as easy to catch as that though, wearing a beekeeper suit you'd just hold a cardboard box under the ball of bees, and gently sweep them off the pole with a soft brush. Close the box and you're done, bung them in an empty beehive and you have a free colony of bees to make honey for you.

Indeed, all the swarm wants to do is find a new home. When the bees swarm they all fill up with honey from the hive they're leaving so they don't starve whilst looking for a new home, which makes them very docile (think how you feel after eating Christmas dinner!). A swarm of bees is no threat at all unless you start throwing things at them, but I'd agree it can look a little scary if you don't understand what they're doing.
