Default Hooking up laptop to car - OBD tech advice pls

Having just paid a dealer £50 to isolate a simple sensor fault I though I would try and hook my laptop up to the car and do it myself [& much more] next time. Trouble is my head is spinning as I dont know much about it and the connections and software required.

I need to be able to see stuff like fueling level [helps diagnose a dodgy MAF] injector cycles [find a rogue injector on a Diesel] etc - just like the BMW dealer software does. Fiddling to change alarm chirp tone or tweaking headlight off delay will be a bonus

I have enquired of this seller on e-bay but the wisdom of Scoobynet is sought to see if this is the product that will sort me out :

eBay.co.uk: BMW DIAGNOSTICS SCANNER - OBD I/II Version 1.36 (item 180034222389 end time 30-Dec-06 11:30:41 GMT)

Luckily I have a serial port on the laptop but other than that little clue yet.

Cheers

D

Ohh that helps!

Working out if I need to buy an 'interface' [large plug] AND a 'scanner' [box between laptop and OBD plug] now!

i just use an OBD cable - Mocom Racing - Performance car and trackday products have the taxtric cables

Mocom Racing - Performance car and trackday products

and then hook it up to your laptop.

Run software such as ecuexplorer to identify the fault codes.
