Did you ever go to the Moon Club in Bristol at that time?

I've got the legendary Shelly's Night Club Sasha mix somewhere.

Yes at the bottom of St Pauls road.

The big club in Bristol for dance stuff was the Dug Out (where I used to work)
Along with the Tropic Club - Where I was a member. I used to spend most of my time in the Tropic. The Dug Out closed and the Moon Club opened not too long after if I remember rightly. Then the Moon and The Tropic became the two clubs.

The Moon club - changed name and became quite well known nationaly. I remember seeing Nick Warren down there for the last time as me and him used to play house and go go records in his bedroom in the late 80s.

Anyway I expect you know all this if you are Bristol Old School

Yep - Stoke Croft lol. I was a regular at the Dug Out. You must know loads of people I know. Nellie Hooper, Daddy G, Milo Johnson, Manfred, Dave Macdonald etc etc . Wednesday nights were the best dug out nights IIRC - when all the 'faces' would be there.

I worked at the Moon Club as sound man/event manager/house promoter the entire time until it closed down and then became LaKota.

I can claim credit for giving Nick his first ever gig - on a Monday night. Just trying to remember who he played with at that time...

Indeed. we had a guy come to the Moon one day from Manc with a pile of 12" singles by some band called the Happy Mondays asking if we would give them a gig. We politely declined...

Oops.... slight error of judgement there....

Strange to think we were mixing in the same world many years ago.
It seems like several a lifetimes ago now...I was trying to remember what the moon turned into when I was typing above post, but for the life of me couldnt remember the name Lakota. Thats how long ago it seems.
Nick W - first starting DJing with lad called Darren - cant remember his second name. He may have moved on by the time he was at the Moon.

I used to go and see the Wild Bunch a fair bit. Is it just me - but clubing dancing to the music all just seemed to be a bit rawer back then...perhaps it is just rosy tinted specs.

Steve

After Bristol I was based in Brighton for many years and finaly stoped the clubbing thing really about 5 years back. I have lost all interest in it - Its not the same as the old days and I am now way too old. But still like to listen to everything dance-R&B from Incognito through to LTJ Bukhem.

.
Clubbing was 'real' back in the day. It was a new thing back then.

It was a little guy called Darren, that's right. They lived over in Bedminster back then, near Victoria Park. There was that girl in his gang as well who made little sculptures. Can't remember her name now.

Other DJ names to conjure with - Ed (and Bill) Sargent, Dom Thrupp, John Stapleton, Manfred again (the Go Go king) Costa's Cafe, Claud and Derek, Saphire Pat and Andy Morrison. And don't forget 3D the graffitti arist. We all know what happened to him...

I'll have to drop you a PM so we can do some Old Skool name dropping. Did you know any of the local Bands of the time?

You still in Bristol UB or are you in new parts now.
I still have a few friends from back in the day (non music related) who I go and see once a year.

Yes you are right - it was real and I feel quite privaliged looking back on it to have been part of it all the way from early brit funk right through to Drum and Bass.

Some of the nights I had in places like Hacienda were ******* fantastic.
It was always a new sound...dance music just seems to be reinventing the wheel these days.

The only bloke I saw recently who impressed me was in Munich. His name is erobique. I only went because It was a freeby (I had helped out with the promotion). He is a scruffy bloke in a suit surrounded by keyboards, computers and a couple of decks. Basicaly he is a very talented musician. He makes up kicking uplifting housetracks on the fly inculding the vocals, everything. Realy worth seeing at somepoint.

Quit Bristol in 97, quit clubs and raves in 95 when it went all cheesy, 'anthemic' and corporate. Pete Tong has a lot to answer for...

A really good current DJ that can play a wicked 'old skool' flavour set, but made up of current tunes is Joe Ransom. I've got a number of his mixes I record from Kiss FM. Very good indeed. Recommended.

Nah, it wasn't heavy - just deep 'underground' in more ways than one.

Subterranean was the best word for it I reckon.

A bit of background.

It proves that Steve and me didn't imagine it... even though it was a very long time ago.....

BBC - Bristol - Made In Bristol - Diggin' the Dug Out

The Dug Out Web site is launched

Dug Out The Sounds of Bristol // Launch

Every city’s musical history has a club that became emblematic of the developing scene – the Wag Club, The Torch, Erics, Shoom, The Hacienda to name a few and Bristol had the Dug Out. Favourite turntable residents at the Dug Out were the legendary Wild Bunch, a sound system which combined the talents of Grant Marshall, Nellee Hooper, Miles Johnson, Robert Del Naja and later a young Andrew Vowles. Although the club itself closed in 1986, for those who went there regularly (and for others who simply claim they did!) the Dug Out remains a potent symbol of musical creativity Bristol-style.

Def Con - Smith and Mighty - names from the past!

Astraboy - Yes poor quality but enjoying listening to that.
