Anybody been abroad for Christmas?

Hi – I’m thinking about where to take the family for next Christmas, having had enough of cold roast turkey, crackers with cufflinks and … relatives. I’m not made of money but I know it won’t be cheap. I’m thinking of a place where there are traditional customs, good hospitality and hopefully snow. What more could you provide a young child than snow on Christmas Day? So far, I’m thinking about Rovaniemi in Finland (near the ‘real’ Santa Claus, though it’s very dark there); Montpelier in Vermont (USA); Alborg (Denmark) or taking the easy option and going to the Alps. If there’s skiing that’s a real bonus but I don’t want to pay a premium for it, so an expensive ski resort is probably out of the question. Any experience of Eastern Europe? A Subaru hire car would be good too!

Got back from 2 weeks in the Canary Islands last Friday. Blue skies and sunshine everyday. Between 22 and 25 degrees during the day and about 17 on a night.
No mad shopping to do, no traffic chaos for the sales and best of all no family arguments![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
We go abroad just about every year now

Denmark is ok at Christmas, I had a traditional family one with my ex in 2005 and it was good fun. Any reason for choosing Aalborg? Copenhagen will have more going on, and Tivoli is a great place to take kids. Snow isn't guaranteed though, last year we had a huge great dump (of snow) overnight and it took me a good hour to dig the car out, I was in Copenhagen for new year just gone and it was just wind and rain.

Did Xmas in NZ on our six month travelling honeymoon.
Was nice but I prefer being back here with family.
Also did one in the Alps with family - That was cool.

Spent one Crimbo in Canada with rellies. Snow, snow, snow. A REAL Crimbo !
Spent this Crimbo in the lakes. at an hotel, wouldn't do it again. Nice food, nice surroundings but all the other guests were very cliquey and it sorta spoiled it.

Much as we moan about family, you really cannot replace them.

I would suggest it depends what you want and what you are used to .......
If currently your crimbo's are spent with your own immediate family and they are coming with you abroad there is no reason not to have a good time. If you spend some time with family, some with friends and some down the pub then you might struggle.
Remember wherever you go people will be spending time with their families, they aren't waiting to meet you and have fun.
I did something similar this year. I spent crimbo day with friends and family, boxing day with the outlaws, then got on a ferry and went to the Nurburgring to meet like minded friends. We had a brilliant time Quad biking, walking, visiting places and drinking copious amounts of beer.
Remember christmas isn't about where you are, it's about who you are with.
