Default Electricity pylons. Unsafe?

I am looking to move house soon and a house that i have found which fits the bill has a large pylon nearby.

It is approximately 100m away which worries me and the missus as i have heard reports of pylons causing Leukemia in children.

There are plenty of other houses around, much closer to the pylon than the one we are looking at and there is also a pylon next to the local primary school.

Surely if there was any health risks we would be warned, wouldn't we?

Has anybody any thougts or experience on the subject.

Pilon Ambient Energy Lights Field of Florescent Bulbs
Read this. Personally I'd think long and hard if they can do this.

In short - you'll buy it, but you'll have hell selling it.

No. No. and No. Even if it is cheap, the *potential* health risk just isn't worth it. They're bloody ugly too! Do you really want such an eyesore next to your home?

I really wouldn't buy a house near a pylon. Those 1970s public information films of kids getting electrocuted put me off them for life!

Don't do it!

Possibly, but there are plenty of other houses on the same avenue, some with the pylon in their rear garden and these houses sell without a problem.

The pylon is relatively out of sight from the house so its visibility isn't a problem and as for the health issue, there doesn't appear to be any scientific tests proving health risks, it all appears to be scaremongery, unless anybody knows different.

Thumbs down

I've stood under one with a fluorescent tube in one hand........and it lit

Now that means there's a HUGE potential there somewhere, and who knows WHAT it'll do to cells. I wouldn't want to be anywehere near one for longer than I had to be.

So is it the pylon or the cables that are considered a danger?

There is one about 150 yards from my work, If I go outside when it's foggy or raining etc I can clearly hear it buzzing.

I wouldn't buy a house anywhere near one.

There didn't used to be any scientific test to prove that smoking was dangerous - it would be equally realistic to ask if there was a scientific test to prove that that there was no health risk. You can follow a logical process that starts with suncream recommendations and ends with mobile phones cooking your ear - again - just because it is logical, it isn't necessarily true, but if I had the choice of being homeless or keeping my kids under a pylon 16 hours a day I would be looking for a dry place to keep my cardboard box every day

Me neither. Drove 200 miles to view a house. The agent had failed to mention the pylons near it. We didn't even bother looking inside. Just went back to the agent and said not interested. We had wondered why it was so cheap and subsequently discovered it had been on the market for months and with every agent in town.

I assume it sold eventually. Shame because it was in a superb location apart from the pylons.

I wouldn't buy it. Not worth the risk, the RF and magnetic field is vast near those things.

But overhead railway wires make all the same buzzing and fizzing noises if you've ever stood in a quiet enough place to notice it, and we don't all make a huge effort to avoid properties near electrified rail lines do we??

There are arguments for & against buying near pylons. Some people will accept living near a pylon if the property is reduced in price, compared to other similar properties that are not affected by the pylons.

Just remember, theres no place like ohm.

What voltage do you get on electric railway lines which I believe is is DC anyway compared with the voltage on the National Grid?

Plenty of people live near these things with no problems, the risk is increased but anymore than normal living ????? ................ people still smoke when they know not to, people use mobile phones excessively when clearly it aint going to be good for you (it may not be bad either of course) etc etc.

You pays your money, I thought the risks were far higher when living right next too the pylons - 100m wouldn't bother me overly although it is all a balance. Somebody somewhere will always buy if the price is right.

Plenty people live next to landfill with all that methane for example, next to roads with all that pollution ............

That's cool.

Remember doing that with a fluorescent tube against the transmission aerial for the campus radio station at uni, but hadn't thought about pylons!
