Default GB or UK?

At what point did we become the United Kingdom?? Im sure years ago we were Great Britain, but now days we are refered to as the UK and not GB.

Is this the influence of the USA and there ability to abbreviate names?

The Act of Union in 1800 might have had something to do with it

If I remember right its the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland........so UK includes NI and GB is only England, Wales and Scotland.

The act of union 1707 created The Kingdom of Great Britain. "GB"
The act of union 1800 created The United Kingdom (of Great Britain and Ireland) "UK". So as "UK" is more modern should that be the one to use?

We are part of the UK but not Great Britain.

Can I throw British Isles in to the hat! (Geographically rather than politically)

Great Britain ! (We can always pretend). And the Americans will keep calling us "Great Britain" up until the day we don't do exactly what they want. Then we'll be part of "Old Europe".

Just to clarify the only reason "Great" is used in GB is to signify that it is the larger of the British Isles and to separate it geographically from "Brittany"

In fact it probably derives from the French anyway, Bretagne and Grande Bretagne.
