Question Online Shop ...

Thinking of buying a Camera Online ...

Anyone any experience of either:-

1. Fotosense

and/or

2. The DigitalCamera shop

Both deals are equal ... its down to the best service.

I have heard bad things about PixMania - are they best avoided?

Amazon are good, I know that, but they struggle to keep their prices competitive.

Default Pixmania!

Two mates I know have bought cameras from them.

Mate A) Bought camera, all was OK.

Mate B) Had his CC transaction queried but only found out about it when he e-mailed them or rang them. There was an amount of faffing about with "next day" delivery too. Which p*ssed him off no end as he's self employed and stayed home waiting for it.

Result - One happy mate, one mate happy with the camera but p*ssed off at the ordering and delivery.

IMO don't write off Pixmania, maybe better the devil you've heard about etc...

I have always had excellent service and prices from Pixmania. Note they are based in Paris.

When doing a seach for Digital Cameras I found Digital Cameras at Top Online Retailer Bristol Cameras who were very keen on prices and most helpful when I phoned. I didn't use them in the end because I didn't have enough dosh.

You'll get shunted to photo forum soon and they will have the answers. dl

PS. I have a Brownie 127 in the garage - still with original case. Of interest? Not sure how much technology you can handle all at once

Pixmania - generally the best prices and a good selection, however I dont think they do the cameras on finance, so that could count them out for you...

I've bought stuf from pixmania a couple of times. No problems so far. If its Canon you're thinking of getting check out 'canon_outlet' on fleabay, big savings to be had if they happen to have what you're after.

Tried that - they have had a directive from Head Office that they will ONLY match THEIR own online prices!!

I said to them that I will be there in 30minutes with money in pocket if they match the deal - 'sorry, she said, Head Office will not allow us to do what we once did'.

"Jessops in trouble" headline looming?? I think so! Sell your shares NOW!

Might be worth looking at Warehouse Express if you haven't already - I've had excellent service from them.

Or because after posting there he was advised to look at other cameras from Canon, Nikon or Sony.

Personally I'd look at Canon or Fuji.

The Ricoh doesn't quite cut it despite looking good on paper.

Don't you just love sweeping statements like this .....

Why doesn't it cut it then?

Ricoh are highly regarded by those who know and are not swayed by 'names'.

This owner isn't impressed.

Or this one, this one and this one!

That would be enough to make me think twice.

Still, if you know better...

Anyway, why do you want a new camera, still struggling to understand the complexities of the DSLR? Which reminds me, someone with your limited photography skills might actually be better off with something simple.

If they were highly regarded by those in the know, I would have suggested it.

I'm sure you won't be disappointed with it, but I still suggest you look at Fuji, Canon and Nikon.

Ricoh don't have the same standing in the digital market as they did with film - although they never had the standing of the big five, (Canon, Nikon, Minolta, Olympus and Pentax) or Contax and Leica in the good o' days of film.

Still, sorry I can't help you with getting the best price for the camera 'online' - good luck with the search

Hmmmm, thats because you cannot read between the lines of the reviews ... for every negative review there are 3 positives.

I take all the info in - register it - debate it - and make an intelligent decision - something you struggle with I see!

Point taken, all I know is that the Ricohs I have owned have been stunning.

Canon are superb as well, but Nikon ..... I have NEVER EVER seen a good Nikon Camera - I HATE them!! Wasted my money on one not so long ago ... people who have Nikon Compacts are disappointed with them - and the images are soft and crap!

Ricoh made the best value camera of the early 80's in the KR10 and then the KR10 Super ....... quality at fair prices (you are not paying for a 'name' see?)

FujiFilm F30 gets good reviews, but its features are miles behind the Ricoh - anyone got a R5?

Anyone got a FujiFilm F30?

Value is one thing...best camera is another, and we are talking 80/90's film camera's here, not 2007 digital cameras. Then cameras were a box for holding film, your KR10 S (£100-£150 odd) matched my Canon F1n (£1000 odd), but the lenses didn't, its precission didn't and the build quality certainly didn't. These days its more sophisticated with CCD/CMOS sensors, imaging processing and recording, optical v digital zooms and pixel size.

If I was taking names I'd suggest a Leica M8 digital, apart from the fact its a crap digital M series that isn't a patch on the M6 film camera I owned, and way overpriced for what it offers.

As a pro photographer I'll use whatever kit will give me the best results for the given job, name don't matter - I bought a £1300 lens cos I needed it for 1 assignment - so a couple of hundred quid ain't grief for me, Canon or Fuji for my money in the digital compact market.

As I said - good luck in your search for the best price on the Ricoh, Im sure you'll be happy with it...................but dont dismiss those that MAY be in a postion of knowing more than you, price/quality/function wise.

The Ricoh isn't a bad camera, but it isn't the best (despite its paper specs) . A good high quality 3-4x optical zoom is a better option than a 7x optical linked to a poor image processor. Don't forget - you're not dealing with film here.

Gareth

Thanks for the reply Gareth, I take what you say seriously - I would like to pick you up on 3 points (quoted above).

To say the Lenses didn't match the Canon F1n Lenses is a weird thing to come from someone who should know that you could fit ANY PK Lens to the Ricoh ... and, you should also know, that the PK Mount Lenses then were the most widely available ...... so, a Lens that could match (and BEAT) your Lenses could easily have been mounted upon the Ricoh KR10. So thats that one out of the way.

Second point you make - build quality - WFT?? I have my Ricoh KR10 sat here beside me .... well used, well loved, STILL WORKING after 25 years - how's your Canon F1n doing today?

Your third point - Precission - well the Ricoh KR10 took pictures as good, if not better, than any other camera from 25 years ago ....... it would give precission in its timing and in its exposures.

I'm not sure how old you are and whether you really were around in the 80's taking pictures - but, the Ricoh KR10 destroyed cameras costing 10 times as much.

Now, Ricoh may not be a high ranking player in the Digital Processing arena - that I am about to find out as I have ordered the Ricoh R5 - but, to state that their lenses aren't up to much is poppycock.

I shall have the camera in my mits this week - I'll report back
