Default US air strike on UK troops.. film footage on GMTV

the film footage of the US a10 air strike on the british tanks (three/four years ago) has just been shown on GMTV.

full sound and film evidence that IMO that show they asked for identification if FRIENDLIES are in the area and they ask a number of times before they were told that no friendlies are there.. before they attacked.

IMO its not their fault and the film eveidence should be shown at the inquest.

Not seen the footage myself but heard the audio on bfbs just now. the pilots sound pretty devistated after they do realise though.

I'm more shocked that the US have witheld this information than anything else, arent they supposed to be our allies in arms. Discracefull.

The poor fella who after being told one dead/one wounded said "I think I'm going to be sick", not the pilots fault, they were told there were no friendlies, poor intelligence.

It's shameful how the Americans fail to accept responsibility and will do anything to protect their own, originally telling the families of the dead UK soldier no tape existed, then refusing to release it.

Well done Sun!

the americans REFUSED to release the footage, IMO this means they refuse to accept responsibility for killing our troops.

wheres Winston Churchill when you need him? clearly an act of war if it wasnt for the fact tony blair is the BITCHY LITTLE LAPDOG of President Bush

Interesting vid. A seed is planted... "they could be Zil trucks", the orange paint could be "rockets", and over a couple of minutes they latch onto these suggestions as fact. Then their fuel gets low, which pushes them into a decision. It's classic stuff, but nevertheless half their training should be about NOT going down these paths.

Yeah, I saw this. Not very nice for the pilots or the family of the killed soldier.

Anyone else suspicious that the US refused for so long to release the tapes, then the Sun got them and hey presto, the US pilots are exonerated.

And before anyone says HUD is secret, yep, and that stopped them releasing the AUDIO part, how?

Well, to be fair, that should mean a good few less casualties for our boys

And the yanks only support us when they have something to gain from it - They never ever supprt a UK or European or even worldwide cause when they have nothing to gain, or even have to suffer for it.

The information on the HUD is in the public domain and has been for years. There's absolutelyy NOTHING sensitive on it - you can see it in PC World whenever you want, ffs! Just buy a copy of any vaguely contemporary combat flight sim...

The only thing that was sensitive, and I think we all know why, is the content of the radio conversation between the pilots and the JSTARS.

Oh, and if that defines co-operation then perhaps we'd be better off if they didn't. remember in the first Gulf war they killed more British personnel than the Iraqis did...

SB

PS They made EXACTLY the same mistake when they shot down one of their own Blackhawks over Northern Iraq a few years ago.

It's a tragedy, and shouldn't have happened.

But it's a war, not a video game. People are nervous and they have guns, and they make mistakes which end up with people dead.

The whole Iraq situation is an almighty f**k up which should never have happened in the first place.

Have you watched the vid? Struck me more as 'shooting fish in a barrel' than a 'fog of war' 'all hell breaking loose' type scenario.

I've watched about the first 3 minutes of the video and the pilot has said 3 times that he can see something orange on the vehicles!

Makes you wonder why they can't just fit transponders to all vehicles on the same side.

If they can spend millions on making sure the enemy stays dead, why can't they spend a bit more on a more reliable way of indentification rather than painting an orange blob on the vehicles.

I'm no expert on these things, but you would like to think that if there was any doubt they'd hold fire.

It wasn't a spur of the moment thing by the looks of it, and orange markings were constantly sighted.

I guess because if the enemy got hold of the codes then it would be difficult to shoot them down ...

The news reports this morning suggest they broke a number of protocols including firing without authorisation and failure to correctly identify the location of the british convoy.

Clearly, from the video, there was significant doubt at the outset, and yet they opened fire without obtaining clearance.

Protocol is there for a reason.

Aparently the pilots were high ranking officers in the national guard air division.

If that is all correct, there are no excuses - another couple of gung ho yanks that should be crucified for their actions.

Go pick up a copy of Flight International or any other aviation magazine - you'll find HUD representations in there all the time. As I said, the information displayed is in the public domain.

The only time the information displayed in the HUD is classified as secret is when the tactical information relates to real-time, ongoing operations. Clearly that is not the case here.

Or, of course, when somebody has cocked up and the Pentagon doesn't want to face up to it.

But hey, it wouldn't be the same DCI if you let the facts get in the way of an opportunity for some name-calling, would it?

Shameful episode, too many assumptions were made coupled with rubbish intelligence about the positions of friendly forces. We were always briefed never to shoot or drop weapons unless absolutely certain of what we were seeing. The pilots involved will have to bear that burden for the rest of their days. Not very impressed with their style of communications either.

Another escapade of American "Gung Ho", even in Iraq today you have to keep 100m away from them when we are in a convoy. we are on the same side for FFS.

Can be a bit crazy on Route Irish from the green zone to the BIAP going slow is the bullet catchers we call ****** L/R.
