This is the front of our house as of now (well pic was taken in september 06)


we're having a two storey extension on the rear in a month or so.
but our dilemma is that we'll be having new uPVC windows on the rear, new front door and patio doors at the rear too.

Now. do we replace the uPVC windows on the front as well?

AND do we keep with the light oak effect or go for white all round?

Thing to consider.
1. we're painting the rendering in County Cream later this year.

2. Light Oak is about 25% more expensive than white.

3. the windows on the front are light oak inside as well and we really would like the white internals.

4. at the mo the windows on the front seem poor quality, only have two transoms that open on each window, so not giving fire escape exit!! also not toughened glass upstairs either even though the glass height is less than 800mm from the floor!!!


main question is do we go for WHITE instead of light oak, we're leaning more to the white.

what do you think... the 25% price increase is something to consider too.

White double glazing is the cheap option and looks cheap. Everyone knows it's the cheaper option too.

Spend the extra and get oak outside and white inside.

I could very nearly get my whole house done white, in the end got dark wood and white....and only got half the windows done, and french doors put in.

Woodgrain on white (white inside) should only be 15% more than white.

I like the light oak! - it does look classier IMHO

Another thing to save cost is take out the leading - it's quite a big cost save and lets in alot of extra light - I was quite surprised when we had a window changed and went for a no lead option.

The guy who fitted my window was telling me about a bloke he fitted windows for who planned to paint his upvc frames - apparently there are special paints designed for this job - if that helps...

Light Oak or even Mahogany for a stronger contrast. My house is rendered with mahogany windows, and people in the street that have gone for cheaper white have spoiled the look IMO.

thats the thing, the money we can save on having white could be the difference in having the front windows done or not.
we're even thinking that the front rendering is poor and might have that re done. So we need to have the windows replaced before windows come out and new ones go in.

the other thing about going for white is it puts our mark on the house over the previous owner.

IMO the diamond windows ruin the whole house. Get plain glass without diamond inserts. Yewah, go for oak too.

I would keep the darker windows all round especially if you are having the walls painted cream the darker windows will break all the whiteness up otherwise it could look quite bland.

nice house. two en suites are handy. we still have a downstairs bathromm..... well plumber has now removed it! it will go upstairs when the extensions done.

Yup, we can shut away the in laws when they stay It was a must for our new house, very handy.

A friend of mine did my windows/doors, we had Rock doors which are quite expensive, stable door on back which is nice. The cost of the brown over brown was marginally more than the white, he said the major window companies mark it up quite a lot because "they can!".

Dark windows over white anyday.
and get rid of the pikey effect crosshatching, it spoils the whole look.
If you can't afford all brown then just replace the front with brown and go with the cheaper white round the back.

I'd replace the cherrywood with a mahogany (dark wood) frame which looks a lot better

Woodgrain windows and doors are 25-30% more expensive than white wherever you buy them from. We don't manufacture our own yet but buy from several different company's, so as to give the customer as much choice as possible. All of them charge the extra for woodgrain. It is a plastic veneer that is bonded to the PVCu so all the profiles and door panels cost more to purchase, they have to charge more. Which to have? well its all down to personal preferance/cost.

It will look fine with white, its just a shock when its first done, soom get used to it.

Dark exterior, white interior.....well worth the wait if you can't do it all at once. The outside never looks dirty and although these windows don't need much maintenance they do need CLEANING at some point Dark colour much less frequently though


And leaded lights look classy, not pikey IMHO

save as much as possible and have "WERU" windows fitted. Will be white but they will be "WERU" Safer should you sell (easier to like) and ultimate quality.

Looking at your house on that photo DO NOT FIT WHITE WINDOWS please!

Go for the white inside/woodgrain outside, it should only cost 15% more than plain white and if they try to charge you more, shop elsewhere!

I buy from two different manufacturers and both charge around 15% more for woodgrain over white.

had a drive up around Nottm this afternoon and saw a nice house with cream wall and Light Oak windows, looks really nice.
Then we saw a nice house on near ours with nice Light Oak.. stopped and knock on the door to see who fitted them... the guy said it was SafeStyle windows.. and they'd been in 6yrs!!!! thy looked like they'd just been fitted!!


so leaning towards Light Oak now.. but it does come down to cost.

Jo's not sure about the Lead on them though, maybe not having the lead work will give more visability looking out.

i think the white inside is a must now tho.


got SafeStyle coming round tomorrow and Anglian Windows coming Friday.

Had two companies over this weekend to have a look, both came up with different views... so now we are confused... hence having a couple more quotes to see what others come up with.

I may be wrong here but were'nt safestyle recently featured on a TV Watchdog type programme about their bad service.
Googling them doesnt give one much confidence in their ability to do a good job I'm afraid.

Just ring a local company. They'll be just as competitive, no hard sell....and you could only have a few windows at a time done. As long as I have 2 windows done at a time, I won't get charged more.

Try your local fire-brigade - a fireman fitted ours LOL - apparently they all have extra trades due to making the most of their shift patterns to earn a tad extra

It also depends on what the neighbours have done. If yours is the only house with white leaded windows it will stick out like a sore thumb and lots of people won't like it.

So go with the flow of what others around you have done.

If you want to know what white would look like then photoshop the pic, or get someone to do it for you.
Whatever you get make sure you know the manufacturer's details, our windows have knackered catches mechanisms (corrosion due to living 300yds from the beach) and the maintenance guy is having trouble sourcing replacements for various components as they're 'no name' winodws.

The comapany add on the extra 25% to make a bigger profit, when they buy the plastic from the manufacturer its all 1 price for white/ woodgrain or Oak give them grief on the price and they may give you a better discount

Had SafeStyle Uk quote tonight.
Priced for LightOak outside with white inside.
started at £38k!!!!!!, then down to £18k.. then down to £15k as we got their number off the net... then came down to £9k!!!

where do they make these prices up from!
