Default council tax question

Whilst trawling - like you do, it appears my house is in band C and is based on the value of my home in 1991 which was between 52k and 68k

Now i only paid 49k for it in 1996 so surely the value band should be in band B

if so am i entitled to have my tax lowered and/or any sort of refund.

cheers

Did values in your area fall between 1991 and 1996? If not then you may have a case.

Is your house one of many? If so check the bands on similar properties.

Having done all that all you can do is write to the Valuation Office asking them to check your band and explaining why you think its wrong.

You need to be a little careful writing as it will cause them to review the banding, ie. it could go up!

If you use this calculator

House Prices Calculator Page

set the value of your house currently in the Date 1 section. If you don't know what it's worth Free UK House Prices - nethouseprices.com can help.

Set date 2 as the 2nd quarter of 1991. Then set your region. This should give a rough idea of the value of your home when the properties were banned for council tax.

Simply put you can't argue it. You have 6 months from when you move in to contest the banding. We've just done it and got ours down a band, you have to let a ****** of an inspector into the house who will measure it take pictures etc etc.
However were you to move and the next owner to contest it and they win you should be re-paid the difference between the new band and the one you're paying at the moment. The previous owner of ours got 2.5K back to say he was pleased was an understatement
