Common problem more prevelant since you need prof to get a plate made.

Find a car of the same make approx year, same colour/model etc. steal the plate, put it on your car and you are safe from cameras, etc.
Also for more serious crime as well.

I've never understood why something which could be worth £,000s is only held on with two plastic bolts or a bit of double sided.

I know of one ****** who hired a car on a nicked licence, kept the car but changed the plates to those of a legit car of the same make model, etc. Apparently he ran it for a couple of years like that.

This was some 12 years or so ago and i am not too sure if you could get away with it now se easily, oh and no, it was not me!

What the heck do you do if police stop you, you have no name of the owner and you are not the registered owner of that numberplate, people who do that must be absolutely retarded and take more risk than they actually gain by doing that.

But how often do you get pulled by the police now? unless the plates been recorded stolen, ANPR won't pick it up, would imagine someone using a stolen plate in such a manner would do so for a short time (until the fines for the legitimate owner build up)& then nick another pair of plates & off you go - probably a black market going on here.

Presume if you report your own plate stolen, you would trigger off ANPR & get pulled yourself? I would guess this is enough to stop people reporting stolen plates.

If you steal the plate, it doesnt give you title to the number, thats on the registration document or the retention certificate.

Well you would get to choose your own plate, see?

When you pass your driving test, you select a number - as long as it is, say, 7 digits long and it isn't taken or rude you can have what you like.

Have a few plates made up and thats what is attached to the car - the plate of the driver ....... cars would have NO plates whatsoever, until a driver puts his/hers plates on to drive the vehicle.

Then nicking a plate is simply nicking the owners identity - a simpler case to prove where YOU were rather than the car!

@PSL so the plates have to be easily swappable (and nickable) if I use my wife's car? If I drive out and she drives back we have to take her plates with us? Witnesses seeing an accident can note a number plate, but the police have no idea what vehicle that belonged to, especially with a partial plate. It is much more difficult to tell how old a car is.

It is called a licence plate for a reason you know.

The Police won't know which car but they know who's house to knock on.

And yes, you will have plates in the boot - just the same as an Emergency Triangle and they will be easily swappable in seconds.

They will be mounted internally too.

The toe rags also use them to blag petrol. They put them on , go and fill up and take off without payment 100yds down the road take them off again. very little chance of getting caught.

Age. When you're buying a car it gives an easy indication of quality and value. the police are interested because a new registration plate on an old banger shows it is obviously illegal. Criminals are limited to the plates they can try to use.

After a hit and run the police would have a good idea of the type of vehicle involved if someone has the registration. They may catch the car before damage has been repaired, while the driver is still drunk, etc. Waiting until much later and knocking on a door is nowhere near as effective.

Plates in the boot of each car you might drive is an additional expense, and also increases the likelihood of loss or theft of those plates.

Internal mounting = good idea.

Cloning would be so much easier as there is no correlation between plate and vehicle make, model, or colour. ANPR would only work by tying a plate to a face. I don't see that happening any time soon.

what about the reg plate actually spreyed on to the car in paint! i know it wouldnt look great but if all where the same it wouldnt matter!
