Hi David
Not much at the moment I afraid. Leased lines in the UK are still very expensive compared to DSL and cable modems. There are other varients of xDSL on the horizon. BT has started SDSL testing(symetric as opposed to Asymetric i.e. the same line speed in both directions) - but I think this will be aimed at the business market.
VDSL? Very high bit rate DSL - upto 50Mbs under the right conditions - but don't hold your breath
I suppose you could move house to a cable area, but that's a bit drastic and there have been many documented problems with cable modems aswell.
Sorry I can't be more positive.
Cheers

Thanks Chris
Using 56K dial up at the moment, due to my useless ADSL connection. Move to a cable area - umm
Sign up with NTL par chance - a company that is over 11 billion in debt I think not.
How much is a leased line BTW?
Cheers

Leased Line, def. out of the equation unless you can pay a ballpark figure of £10,000pa - £20,000pa depending where you live for a 512/512. Could be cheaper though

why not host your own box at a "ISP" or webhosting company - make it nice and secure, stick terminal services on it or some other remote control package (NetSupport) and if it is just downloads/surfing - surf it via that? be very quick then!
however.. wont work for internet gaming...

Hello
I looked into a leased line, as ADSL is not coming near me anywhere soon.
Incredibly expensive. Around £5000pa for a 64K line!
NTL have started wireless trials, as have www.tele2.co.uk . Could be interesting, but again they are rolling out in densely populated areas first and you need good line of sight.
Steve.

Seeing as your ADSL is crap a leased line (kilostream/megastream) will most likely be just the same. They use very similar technology, so if it's the pair of wires between the exchange and your house that's causing the problems then you'll still have problems, and more expensive ones at that. What speed do you get from your 56k modem? If it's less than 42k then your line is almost cerrtainly duff. Try dialling 175 and see what it says about your line. It should say 'You are connected to (your telephone no.) start test' Put the handset down, it will test the line then it'll ring you back and tell you if there's any faults. Don't bother doing any more tests, and make sure that you only have 1 phone connected so that there's less to muck up the test.

Would have to disagree with adsl and leased line being similair. The leased line has fixed wiring all to itself and is far far more tolerant of distance/crap wiring than ADSL which is effectively multiplexed onto your exsiting phone cable. Its hard wired (swicthed ?) all the way to your ISP so total distance is long and occupies the B/W all the way - unlike the ADSL which can do a few km to yor local exchange before it is effectively terminated onto a backbone connection. Its the fact that the leased line takes fixed bandwidth across the network to its termination point that makes it more expensive than the (contended) adsl.
You would also have take a service which provides a router or supply your own.
Do you *need* the bandwidth or just a *good* connection. If you regularly download a huge amount then it is going to be extremely expensive. If its just a solid 64/128K connection you need then it drops to just very expensive.
Try BtOpenWorld business, pipex, demon etc. The leased line cost used to dpend on the distance - I'm not sure of current pricing structures so most will probably have to quote individually rather than give fixed prices.

Yep, leased lines are v.expensive. We pay £10K p.a. for a 256K line from Demon - eek!!
I'll not say what we pay for our 2Mb one though - it'd choke a Horse
You could go for ISDN-2 at 128K. Do any ISP's offer this with free call charges. It'd be daft paying for two calls just to get 128K.

Shark, we need to know more about the problems you're having, is it your ISP that's crap or your line? If it's the ISP, then try a different one, if it's the line get BT or whoever to fix it.
