Audi A4 Avant 2.5TDi Quattro or BMW 330D Touring Sport
Is the dilemma I currently face.
Looking to spend about 14k
Both cars offer similar performance (BMW slightly quicker), and economy (again BMW slightly higher).
The are about the same money - Audi slightly cheaper.
Given the choice which would you go for?

Not those engines but my mother looked at 02 Audi TDI130 and 03 BMW 320D.
BMW was more driver focused and felt "chuckable" as much as heavy german saloons can be.
Audi is a little driver detached but is effortless to drive. You feel less tired over long journies in the Audi.
Summed it up quite nicely like this.
YOU drove the BMW, the Audi drove YOU. Simple as that.
She bought the audi.

I've go an A6 2.5 and find it great esp on a long run. I thought about a BMW, but didn't like the thought that everyone elso on the road would think I was a complete to$$er.
BMW drivers are always the last to force their way in at the roadworks, and own the fast lane of every motorway.

A couple of years ago, I tried both. Having previously owned 2 BMWs, I expected the BMW to be better. However, as it turned out we liked the Audi much better (strangely, it felt quicker), but couldn't ultimately do a deal that both the dealer and ourselves were happy with.

Come on, Audi Drivers are as bad as BMW drivers nowadays, or have BMW drivers got better, too many about for them all to be tossers.
I would say 330d, faster, better handling, I have driven the a4 2.5 and its ok, very nice but based on other 3 series I have driven the 330d must be fantastic.

IMHO the BMW is by far the more involving drive - it's one of those intangible things that's hard to quantify, but the 330D is fun, while the A4 is precise, mechanical, and rather aloof.
I sold my STI for a 330D last year and haven't regretted it for a moment.
