Question

and all the small icons in Explorer etc!

Upgraded to IE6 last week, now the above has happened.
If I right-click and re-apply the chosen icon it comes back, but on reboot all are black squares again...

Any ideas from the hordes of techies out there?

cheers
ian

Sounds mighty bizzare..I'd see if you've got the latest video drivers installed first off.

Sometimes if your pcs having probs explorer.exe can crash and restart leaving the system tray empty. (happens to mine quite a bit).

reboot normally cures it.

Unhappy

it's actually seems to be a permanent problem - been rebooted a number of times since the icons blanked out.

Perhaps not coincedence that it occured around the same time I installed IE 6?! (why I did that I don't know!)

Question

Have you tried the screen drivers yet?
Also try changing the screen resolution/colour depth.

Thanks for your replies so far!!

Will be checking on latest Video drivers - but think I'm pretty up to date with these.

To describe - the square icons on the system tray next to the 'Start' button are simply black squares.

If I go to Explorer, all the small icons on the drive descriptions, desktop etc are also all black squares.

I'm fairly sure it may be due to the IE6 upgrade I did.

Do you mean system try or Quick Launch tray? The system tray is on the right hand side (unless you have moved it) with the date, Time, etc. The Quick Launch tray is on the left (unless you have moved it) next to the start menu.

Angry

er....

My mistake - I meant the 'quick launch' tray - whoops!!

Looks like it's actually every small icon, including folder and drive icons in the Explorer.

Have you got a pic? Do mean explorer or IE? (Explorer is the bit that makes your desktop you desktop)

I'll post a piccie tonight. Try out the TweakUI tools as well..

It's the icons in Explorer (not IE6) that are also fecked - including the folder and drive icons.

If the icons are black, i would guess that is a video driver problem.

Did IE also upgrage directX?

Try un-installing and re-installing your video drivers.

Cheers

Reinstall ie... reservice pack... and ensure the following folder exists..

C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch
